Overview
It's always exciting when automotive manufacturers produce souped-up versions of their habitually non-spicy cars and it's a trend that harks back to the original Ford/Lotus collab in the '60s and the heady days of the hot hatch wars whereby cars normally reserved for the weekly shop and school run are transformed into legendary, sporty models. BMW did a similar thing with its M cars and these revved-up runabouts never fail to disappoint.
Case in point? The Toyota GR Yaris. The original Yaris is a good car in the grand scheme of its intended market but it is categorically not a sporty car. That all changed in 2020, however, when Gazoo Racing – Toyota's motorsport arm – got involved to develop a rally version of its sub-compact so that the company could return to competing in the WRC. Oh, and they brought in multiple World Rally Championship winner Tommi Mäkinen to lend a hand too, further bolstering the car's legitimacy as a performance model.
As with all homologation specials a certain amount had to be built for public consumption and in the case of the GR Yaris 2,500 was the magic number and what we got was a 260bhp, all-wheel drive supermini with a 1.6-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that could dispatch 60mph from standstill in just five-and-a-half seconds. Add in a beautifully balanced chassis and tuned suspension for impeccable handling and a legend was born.
This early 2021 example, presented in the rather menacing shade of metallic black, comes to market in superb overall condition and benefits from the addition of H&S suspension springs as well as a Milltek performance exhaust. It’s also replete with the factory “Circuit” package it also features 18” BBS wheels, upgraded brakes and adjustable Bilstein shocks as well as carbon fibre-reinforced plastic rear spoiler, side skirt and front splitter. Having covered a mere 17.5K miles, the car has clearly been well-maintained and comes complete with stamped service book showing three main dealer inspections from new alongside an advisory-free MOT.

Summary
With just the right amount of swagger that's backed up by legitimate rally pedigree, the Toyota GR Yaris was a hit from the off and it remains an incredibly capable machine to this day. Although still being produced, these original examples are where it all began which carries its own weight of kudos. If you're after a hugely engaging and exciting chuckabout then this particularly lovely, low-mileage and well-maintained example will definitely scratch that particular itch with aplomb.
