Overview

The Mk7 Golf GTI has always been more than the sum of its parts. That torque-rich 2.0-litre EA888 turbo does the heavy lifting, but it's the way the chassis has been honed for brilliant front-wheel-drive handling that turns a quick hatch into a proper driver's car. Then there's the Edition 40, built to mark the GTI's 40th birthday, which turned everything up a notch with more power, a sharper front end and that clever locking differential working away at the front axle.

This is one of those cars, and we reckon it's a particularly tempting example. It pairs the anniversary specification with two attractive attributes: the six-speed manual gearbox and the practicality of five doors. You get the involvement of a proper three-pedal GTI without giving up the ability to sling a couple of mates/ kids and their kit in the back.

Finished in Oryx Pearl White over the Clubsport's striped-centre sports seats, it's a smart-looking thing that has clearly been cared for. We can see the paint is clean and glossy, the cabin has worn well and the mechanicals are tidy underneath. Smart, fast and practical, with the added kudos of being a special edition, we think it’s a real gem.

Summary

This Edition 40 presents in excellent order and drives with all the analogue GTI charm you'd hope for, which is exactly what makes it such a tempting buy. It's the combination that counts: rare anniversary specification, the sought-after six-speed manual and the everyday usability of five doors, all wrapped in clean Oryx Pearl White paint over a well-kept cabin. With its Volkswagen main-dealer service history in place and a fresh set of front brakes not long behind it, this is a car that's ready to be used and enjoyed. If you've been waiting for a genuinely engaging manual hot hatch you can live with every day, this is a strong one to bid on.
