The Kia Cee'd SW is a great value small estate that's cheap to run. It's also attractive, filled with little luxuries and comes with an unrivalled seven-year warranty as standard – one of its main selling points. But don't let the Kia badge fool you – this is no budget car, it's well built with a quality interior that belies its price tag. The Cee'd moves Kia a step further away from the bottom of the market image it previously had and it's not far behind the Ford Focus in terms of comfort and refinement. The engines are pretty good, too – the 1.6-litre diesel really stands out. It's clean, powerful and returns up to 58mpg. The Cee'd SW was tweaked in late 2009 getting a new shaped bonnet, grille and front and rear lights. The interior was also improved and a low emissions EcoDynamics model was introduced with start/stop technology.The Cee'd was Kia's first car to get a five-star Euro NCAP rating so the SW should be equally as safe. It has dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS, Isofix child seat anchor points and active head restrains which help support the driver and front passenger's necks to prevent whiplash injuries. The only let-down is that electronic stability control – which helps the driver to keep control of the car in a skid – was originally only optional on the top model. However, following the Cee'd's facelifted in 2009, ESC is now standard on the 3 and optional on all other trim levels. The Cee'd SW is significantly roomier than the hatchback model, offering 534 litres of boot space (with the seats in place) compared to 340 litres. That's more than most alternatives, in fact it's not far short of the latest Ford Mondeo Estate – one of the biggest estates around. The boot opening itself offers great access. The tailgate hinges are located on the top (as opposed to the edge) of the roof, which means the tailgate is completely out of the way when opened. Soft-touch materials on top of the dash are also found on the top section of door trim and the Cee'd's dashboard is clear, with controls that are easy to use – the steering also adjusts for height and reach. Grab handles and the glovebox opening have damped movements making the Cee'd feel as if it is finished to a much higher standard than its predecessors. One disappointing aspect is the cheap finish on the door control panel and the instrument binnacle – in bright sunshine it creates an annoying reflection. The interior was given an upgrade in late 2009 with improvements to the materials used as well as the instruments and dials, giving the Cee'd SW a more upmarket feel. The air conditioning controls were also moved up the central console, making them easier to use on the move. There's plenty of room all round with ample space in the back for two adults or three children. Leg and headroom is impressive and it's pretty quiet on the move too – only noise from the 1.6-litre petrol engines is really noticeable under hard acceleration. The seats could do with more support, especially lower down, but the interior is bright and pleasant, plus all cars come with air conditioning as standard. Check our website for more stock.
