PEUGEOT 205

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2025 on Saturday the 17th of May, Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN.

In many people's eyes, the Peugeot 205 was the definitive 1980s hatchback and the most perfect, practical design for a small car ever. Launched in 1983, it was a brilliant rival to the Renault 5 and the Ford Fiesta with its 'wheel at each corner' design and flyweight 750kg kerb weight. No wonder it won What Car magazine's 'Car of the Year' in 1983 and was declared 'Car of the Decade' by CAR magazine in 1990. The 1.6 GTi was particularly singled out for praise, being blessed with brilliant handling and a revvy and eager 105bhp engine and the 1.9 GTi that followed was more of the same with an extra 20bhp and a bit more torque.

Originally ordered new in 1990 from Peugeot Poplar Garages (Five Oaks) Ltd in Billingshurst, this 1.9-litre Peugeot 205 GTi underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2020.

During the restoration, the engine was fully stripped and rebuilt by DN Events, reportedly under the supervision of UK Peugeot specialist Darren Langeveld. The engine work included a reconditioned cylinder head, new valve guides, valve stem seals and recut valve seats. A new clutch was installed, the gearbox thoroughly inspected and additional mechanical work included new brake lines, a full OEM exhaust system and new tyres.

Cosmetically, the restoration involved stripping and powder-coating the front subframe, suspension components and other associated parts. The underbody was also stripped, repaired — including the boot floor — and repainted.

The car was resprayed in its original Arctic White, paired with a black and red interior featuring leather bolsters and red and black fabric seat inserts, complemented by matching red carpets. Remarkably original, the vehicle even retains its factory-fitted Peugeot-branded Clarion stereo head unit.

A detailed invoice from DN Events documents the refurbishment work completed in January 2020. Additionally, a June 2018 invoice from Landspeed Automotive records the replacement of the head gasket, sump gasket, front brake discs and pads, as well as the installation of a new water pump, radiator and thermostat kit. The cam belt was also replaced at 63,110 miles in 2017. The vehicle is accompanied by an earlier main dealer service history, including the original book pack and stamped service booklet.

Lauded as one of the greatest hot hatches of all time, this Peugeot 205 GTi is now ready to enjoy after its recent restoration.
