1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 Split Window – Superspeed Grand Sport | 1-of-1
A 1963 Chevrolet Corvette C2 Split Window Coupe, handcrafted as a one-off Superspeed Grand Sport — a stunning realisation of what GM’s secret Grand Sport project might have achieved if allowed to continue.
This 1-of-1 Super-speed Grand Sport is based on original GM design sketches and engineering concepts from 1963, when a select group of Chevrolet engineers envisioned a lightweight endurance Corvette to take on Shelby’s Cobras at Le Mans and Daytona. Only five original Grand Sports were completed before GM’s racing ban forced the program to shut down.
This car represents the continuation of that vision — built for performance, speed, and competition. Handcrafted by James A. Clements in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this Corvette was engineered with a singular focus on track use and high-speed performance. As a passionate privateer racer and GM dealer, Clements carefully modified the car to align with the Grand Sport spirit: widened arches, lightweight bodywork, and competition-grade reinforcement.
In 2019, the car was acquired by James Whitbeck, a skilled aircraft engineer with the U.S. Armed Forces, who undertook a painstaking restoration. Bringing aviation-level precision to every weld, wire, and panel, Whitbeck restored the Corvette to exacting standards while honouring its historic racing DNA.
Finished in the iconic Gulf Racing Blue and Orange livery—originally proposed for GM’s endurance campaign—the car stands as a rolling tribute to a forgotten chapter of American racing innovation. It features functional racing side pipes, custom magnesium-look race wheels, and a fully sorted chassis.
Power comes from a 400ci V8 producing approximately 550hp, paired to a Power-glide transmission, providing both thrilling performance and reliability for spirited driving. With no electronic driver aids, the car demands focus and rewards skill—just as the original Grand Sports intended.
Recognised by the Antique Corvette and Historical Foundation in Huntsville, Alabama, this Corvette remains a moving monument to the dream GM was forced to abandon. It also inspired the limited-edition collector’s book, included with the sale.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a genuine piece of Corvette history — a car that blends artistry, craftsmanship, and unfulfilled ambition into one breathtaking machine.
