Description
The Background
The Elan hardly needs an introduction to car enthusiasts, being one of Lotus' greatest hits. The new in-house design saw the Elan become the only front-wheel drive car Lotus ever produced. Powered by an Isuzu engine — extensively modified by Lotus — the Elan developed 162bhp. The manual transmission, also sourced from Isuzu, was a 5-speed unit.
Typically (being a Lotus), its handling was exceptional, with the rigid backbone chassis doing the hard work, while the lightweight fibreglass body both reinforced the structure and provided stunning looks. Two variants were launched initially: the Elan 1.6 and the range-topping 1.6 Turbo SE.
The Car
This British Racing Green Elan was first supplied in Glasgow on 12th May 1991, almost exactly 34 years ago. It was specified in British Racing Green and in the desirable SE Turbo specification.
Since then it has had just four previous keepers, the most recent being a keen enthusiast (and member of the owner's club) who kept it under cover. Testament to its careful ownership is a large history file chronicling its maintenance records.
The bootlid area does show signs of lacquer peeling, which could either be polished out or refinished. The wheels have been refurbished and the hood remains in excellent condition. It is understood that the car would benefit from a new set of door seals.
Supplied as driving and running perfectly, with an MOT valid until August, this is a superb bit of summer fun awaiting its next owner.
