RENAULT 5 GT TURBO RESTORED AND LOVELY 1990

motodrome offer this rather super 1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo, finished in silver with black sports trim and red carpets.

If you were around in the 80’s and 90’s and had petrol in your veins, you’ll remember these legendary little terrors. A couple of generations later, as so many were crashed/fell into the wrong hands/rusted away, they’re both pretty thin on the ground and highly desirable, especially in largely original spec. Hence when I came across this one I had to add it to the collection.

And driving it takes me back to when I was much younger. You’d think 120bhp wouldn’t feel like much in the modern age, but Super 5’s only weigh 850kgs, so once the turbo boosts up they really fly.

This one is a late example, and is a genuine GT Turbo, with C405 chassis and C1J engine, and the V5 shows GT Turbo.

fitted with the original sports seats, electric front windows (working), remote locking, alloys (shod with a matching set of Falken tyres).and a more modern stereo.

Apart from the oversized stainless exhaust, aluminium radiator and intercooler, it’s in standard spec as far as we can tell. And the anti-percolation fan is still intact and working, unlike most.

The last owner, a design engineer for a major car manufacturer, acquired it in 2016 as a rather tired but complete example, and over the next 3 years set about restoring it to the standard you see here.

Rust areas on the floor removed and repaired

Front subframe powder coated in black

Complete body respray in the original colour

New side stickers.

Reconditioned front fog lights

New battery bracket support

Engine and Gearbox

Complete engine rebuild with new: pistons, sleeves, gaskets, timing chain, tensioner, oil pump, water pump.

Crankshaft journals reground with new main and rod bearings

All brackets plated or powder coated including valve cover, air filter case, chain cover, belt pulley, etc

OE spec turbocharger rebuilt by Midland turbo

Cylinder head professionally cleaned and skimmed

New carburettor kit

Spark plugs, spark plug leads and distributor cap were renewed during rebuild

Set up post rebuild by Mark Fish Motorsports

New clutch (pressure plate, bearing and disc).

Gearbox synchros and hubs for 1st and 2nd gear replaced, new oil.

Rear brakes rebuilt with new calipers, discs, pads and handbrake cables

New Lucas alternator

Since completion in 2019, it’s been little used apart from regular trips for MOT and servicing, and it seems to have covered no more than 700 miles since being restored.

Odometer reading 88000 miles.

We have a file of history from the last ownership, with bills supporting the above work.

It comes with MOT to December 2025

We have 2 sets of keys and fobs, and it comes with lots of potentially valuable spares too.

On test on arrival it performed absolutely superbly, with a riotous driving experience, and it’s surprisingly rattle free, which for a performance French supermini, is a strong achievement.

NB the photos and walkaround video show the nearside door speaker grill cover is missing. I found it under the passenger seat afterwards.
