The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive
It was Mercedes-AMG's attempt to bring the iconic gullwing door model into the electric future while maintaining the performance level of a super sports car. Unveiled as a concept under the name SLS E Cell and later offered as a small series from 2013, it showed how far the brand wanted to go in terms of high-performance electric mobility at the time. Visually, the basic shape of the SLS remained unchanged, but almost everything under the bodywork was new. Instead of a V8, there were four water-cooled synchronous electric motors, one per wheel. This arrangement enabled true electric all-wheel drive with very fast control of the drive torque per wheel, known as torque vectoring, which significantly increased traction and agility. In 2013, the system output was already 552 kW / 751 hp, with a maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters available immediately from the first meter. This enabled the SLS AMG Electric Drive to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, making it one of the fastest production electric vehicles ever when it was launched. The top speed was electronically limited to 250 km/h. An important component was the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of around 60 kWh and a system voltage of 400 volts. It was housed in a T-shaped casing in the center tunnel and behind the seats to keep the center of gravity low and optimize weight distribution. Depending on the measurement cycle, Mercedes specified a range of approximately 250 kilometers, although significantly less was possible in sporty driving, which was in keeping with the character of this vehicle.
Due to the battery and the four motors, Mercedes-AMG had to design a separate front end for the chassis. A pushrod suspension system, familiar from racing, was used to create space and precisely control additional masses. At the same time, a sophisticated recuperation system was employed to enable the car to recover energy during deceleration and relieve the mechanical brakes. The driver could select different driving programs and levels of deceleration via recuperation, allowing the car to be tuned from comfortable to very direct. Inside, the Electric Drive remained close to the familiar SLS, but added its own touches with special displays for power, charge status, and recuperation. An optional sound system generated an artificial driving noise on request to give the driver more feedback and make the experience more emotional, as the drive otherwise operated almost silently. The technical consistency was particularly impressive, as the model was not a converted series SLS, but an independent high-performance electric sports car with special electronics, cooling, and drive control. Production remained very small, with probably fewer than 13 vehicles built, of which fewer than 10 were delivered to private buyers, with the rest remaining in the possession of Mercedes, making the SLS AMG Electric Drive an extremely rare collector's item. In retrospect, it represents an early phase of electric mobility, in which Mercedes-AMG wanted to demonstrate that electric performance does not mean sacrifice, but rather opens up new technical possibilities.
About the vehicle offered here:
This SLS Electric Drive was built in 2013 and delivered to Norway. It was first registered there on August 14, 2013, to a well-known billionaire, who was the vehicle's first owner. He was spotted several times driving the SLS on the streets of Oslo. During its time in Norway, the AMG was serviced at Mercedes-Benz Oslo on the following dates: on September 25, 2015, with 8,797 km, on January 23, 2017, with 9,691 km, on June 22, 2018, with 12,284 km, and on August 30, 2019, with 13,242 km. In 2020, the SLS finally arrived in Germany, where it received a one-day registration from a dealer on July 14 of the same year. The vehicle was then purchased by Mechatronik and became part of its in-house collection. In the meantime, on July 28, 2023, with a mileage of 13,967 km, maintenance was carried out at Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. This SLS E-Drive offers an extremely rare opportunity for any Mercedes collector. Our sales staff will be happy to answer any detailed questions you may have. Please note that vehicle viewings are only possible by prior appointment.
