Overview

The original BMW M2 could very well represent the most M for your money. What with the more "prominent" Bavarian bruisers that carry that venerable single letter on the boot lid becoming increasingly (and indeed prohibitively) expensive - whether contemporary or classic - the diminutive but highly engaging M2 provides a hell of a lot of bang for your buck nowadays, especially if you opt for one of the lighter and better looking first-gen models.

Beautifully balanced and an absolute hoot to drive the M2 makes a lot of sense in a world where a brand new M3 will set you back the best part of £100K and realistically, for most of us at least, 365bhp from that 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six is plenty. You'll arguably have just as much fun (if not more) behind the wheel of the M2 and you get to keep both your kidneys.

Should you require a little more oomph from your sporty compact though the Competition variant is definitely the way to go. With significant improvements across the board over the original, the Competition model ditched the N55 straight-six in favour of the 405bhp twin-turbo S55 from the M4. Combine that with enhanced chassis dynamics and tweaked electronics and the BMW M2 Competition is a truly captivating and involving machine.

Taking the Competition ethos and running with it this particular 2019 example has been highly modified to be a dedicated track day car. Enhancements include myriad performance upgrades and an ECU remap and dyno tune that push peak power to almost 550bhp as well as the addition of a full Nitron suspension setup and Alcon big brake kit. With additional aero for the exterior and race seats, harnesses and a half cage inside it certainly means business and the vendor informs us that the car has been looked after assiduously and maintained regardless of cost.
