The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3
The GT3 is the uncompromising racing version of the SLS AMG and holds a special place in the motorsports history of Mercedes-AMG. The car was unveiled in 2010 as the first race car of the newly created Mercedes-AMG customer racing program. Developed in accordance with the FIA’s GT3 regulations and in close collaboration with HWA, the SLS AMG GT3 was designed to offer private racing teams a competitive yet reliable car for international sprint and endurance races. The first SLS AMG GT3 made its racing debut on September 25, 2010, as part of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring. The SLS AMG GT3 secured its first victory on just its second outing on the Nordschleife.
Technically, the GT3 differs significantly from the production SLS AMG. At its heart is the large-displacement AMG 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, whose power output was determined by the GT3 regulations in accordance with the respective Balance of Performance classification. Power is transmitted via a sequential six-speed racing transmission. For use on the racetrack, the vehicle received extensively revised aerodynamics featuring a significantly widened body, large air intakes, a front splitter, a diffuser, and a striking adjustable rear wing. At the same time, the interior was completely tailored for motorsports and equipped with a roll cage, a racing seat, a HANS system, and the safety equipment required for professional racing. The SLS’s characteristic gull-wing doors were retained, making the GT3 one of the most distinctive race cars of its generation, even visually.
Already in its first full racing season in 2011, the SLS AMG GT3 became an international success. Mercedes-AMG delivered 40 cars to customer teams, which secured more than 20 victories across four continents. HEICO Motorsport also won the team championship in the FIA GT3 European Championship. In the years that followed, the SLS firmly established itself as one of the most successful GT3 race cars of its era. In 2012 alone, it claimed 43 victories and nine championship titles. The SLS AMG GT3 reached the pinnacle of its motorsports career in 2013. That season, the Mercedes-AMG customer teams achieved an extraordinary Grand Slam at the major GT3 endurance races: victories at the 24 Hours of Dubai, the 12 Hours of Bathurst, the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, and the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The victory at Spa by HTP Motorsport, with Maximilian Buhk, Maximilian Götz, and Bernd Schneider, also marked the SLS AMG GT3’s 100th race win since the start of the customer racing program.
In addition to its successes, it was particularly the combination of the distinctive high-revving naturally aspirated V8 engine, the spectacular gull-wing silhouette, and cutting-edge racing technology that made the SLS AMG GT3 an extraordinary vehicle. At the same time, it laid the foundation for today’s Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing program. With the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 in 2016, it gained a successor, yet the SLS AMG GT3 remains a significant chapter in Mercedes-AMG motorsport history as the first modern customer racing car from Affalterbach and due to its numerous international successes. The SLS GT3’s powertrain concept was so successful that it was carried over to its successor, which continues to dominate international endurance races to this day—most recently with an overall victory at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
