2013 MERCEDES-BENZ SLS

The SLS AMG was one of those rare occasions when Mercedes-AMG was given the opportunity to develop an entire car from the ground up. The result was a proper front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car, powered by one of AMG's great naturally aspirated V8s and with styling that still looks remarkably special today.

This 2013 SLS AMG Roadster is finished in black with a contrasting red leather interior and has covered just 11,500 miles from new.

At its heart is AMG's 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With no turbocharging and an engine designed to be enjoyed throughout its rev range, the SLS has a very different character from the AMG models that followed it. The long bonnet and seating position close to the rear axle only add to the sense that this was built as a dedicated sports car rather than a faster version of an existing Mercedes.

The Roadster loses the coupé's gullwing doors but gains the ability to enjoy that V8 with the roof down. Visually it remains unmistakably an SLS, with its long bonnet, short rear deck and wide stance, while the black exterior gives this example a particularly understated appearance.

That is contrasted by the red leather cabin, which brings some welcome colour to the interior. It is also equipped with the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG audio system, while Apple CarPlay has been added to bring the infotainment more up to date without changing the fundamental character of the car.

The mileage remains exceptionally low at just 11,500 miles, supported by a full Mercedes-Benz main dealer service history. As part of the sale, the car will also be serviced by Mercedes-Benz Brooklands in October, continuing that main-dealer maintenance record for its next owner.

It has also recently been fitted with a complete set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres, so all four corners are running matching modern rubber.

The appeal of the SLS has always gone beyond its performance figures. It comes from an era when AMG was still able to put a large-capacity naturally aspirated V8 into a relatively simple rear-wheel-drive sports car, and the Roadster makes the most of an engine that is a huge part of the experience.

With just 11,500 miles, full Mercedes-Benz main dealer history, a forthcoming service at Mercedes-Benz Brooklands and a strong black-over-red specification, this is a particularly well-kept example of the SLS AMG Roadster.
