Neonicotenoids are generally bad news, in terms of impact on pollinators and residues in watercourses. There are questions about whether some of the alternative practices currently allowed are significantly better, though.
I was surprised they had much luck on rape, given only down the road Harry has given up on it.Smollet said:

Pretty sure it all happened with Clarksons Meghan column?
Pretty sure they didn’t renew anything with him. I heard it on Smith and Sniff I think it was. But series 4 was already commissioned so that’ll be the last one.
Same with Grand Tour. Certain things were already agreed, but no more.

I suspect that there is a law of diminishing returns. Similar to anti-biotics.
You develop some pretty specialised (or horrendous [dependant on your viewpoint]) chemicals and then, over time, the weeds/bugs develop resistance and you end up spraying more, for less results.
Meantime, you might also be killing of the parts of nature that can help you.
Whilst Countryfile is a far less serious program, I recall watching an episode when Adam went to visit a farmer who grew older varities of wheat.
The savings were had because he used far less pesticides and weedkillers but that blackgrass and some bugs thrived.
However, when it came to harvesting, the wheat (being an older variety) was much taller and you would set the combine blade higher to only take in the wheat and some stalk. Effectively, the plant itself had evolved to outgrow (in height) the weeds (in this particular case).
By spraying insecticides, we may also be killing off the wasps, larve, beetles, that might kill the cabbage stem flea beetle, for example.

It’s cancelled after series 4 IIRC
All the in the knows said it was cancelled when they'd just started filming season 3. Since then season 2 and 3 have been smash hits and season 4 has been commissioned, so safe to say the rumours of it being cancelled were nonsense. I suspect it will keep running until they run out of material or people stop watching it.768 said:

Yes (despite people jumping to conclusions a while back that it was cancelled after this). They're filming the last few months of Season 4 now (to Summer 2024) and presumably will continue filming with Season 5 even without it being (publically) renewed until, typically it seems in the Autumn.
I imagine all the posturing about not renewing about the time of the Meghan issue was just that - keeping the corporate head down given it's one of Amazons biggest shows.
Even if Amazon didn't renew for season 5, here's a thought, make it anyway, then offer it to the BBC. Auntie really really needs a surefire banger for years to come. Sunday evenings, 8:15pm, straight after Countryfile.
If Auntie doesn't want it C5 would be in like Flynn, again Sunday evenings, maybe an hour earlier?

Not sure JC is welcome over at the BBC If Auntie doesn't want it C5 would be in like Flynn, again Sunday evenings, maybe an hour earlier?

Not sure why Amazon wouldn't want it ocnsidering almost universal praise. Not sure if it's true but I read somewhere it's believed to be one of their most sucessful shows. If Auntie doesn't want it C5 would be in like Flynn, again Sunday evenings, maybe an hour earlier?
I think it would also be one of their cheapest to make as well.

Found out today that they sell the JC dark produce in the Amazon Fresh shops in London and it’s also available to buy on Amazon too. Surely they can’t be making that much product to supports those sales streams from just the farm.
Of course not. They're just slapping their brand on outside goods.Clarksons Farm, as far as I'm concerned its a great blend of humour and education.

The show will naturally run its course sooner than later. His somewhat magpie approach to farming has a limited lifespan - at some point he's going to run out of new animals to try and farm, new comedy accidents to have or machines to break, and new ways to p1ss off the council. Plus the characters are evolving in a way that becomes less interesting to the viewer - the original schtick was that he knew nothing about farming and everything about the world, and Kaleb knew everything about farming but had never left the bubble of Chadlington. Fast forward 4 years and Jeremy knows lots about farming and Kaleb has books out and a UK tour of "an evening with Kaleb" and is fast losing that "naive yokel" image. The show probably has a shorter shelf life than his nettle soup.
A consequence of the character development you describe is that the setup scenes just feel a bit silly, when at least they were barely believable in the earlier series. The fake argument over rebuilding the dam and Charlie's timely appearance was a particular low point.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
