Ford Mondeo ST200 | Spotted

There are rare fast Fords, and then there are rare fast Fords...

Despite an association with and history of almost every performance car niche on the planet - from hot hatch to supercar, muscle car to sports coupe - Ford and fast estates don’t have quite the same track record. It’s odd too, because they’ve definitely co-existed (including all bar one generation of Focus ST), yet seldom do you put the Blue Oval and mega wagons together.

Seemingly it was even true at the time of the Mondeo ST200. The overwhelming majority of the cars made were hatchbacks, because that was the one that looked like the touring car and offered plentiful practicality already. Moreover, the standard Mondeo estate could be had with a V6, if required (though a workhorse would probably better suit a diesel) and there were rivals out there with lots of useful turbo torque. We might love the idea nowadays, yet there wasn’t a tremendous appetite for the ST200 wagon at the turn of the century.

Which, of course, makes it all the more interesting 25 years later. These were bonafide STs, don’t forget, not just the badge and Imperial Blue paint, with the same 205hp from an overhauled V6 and chassis tweaks to make the best of what was always a fine chassis. Add to that the double helping of cool that is being a rare and fast estate car - plus a £4k price - and the ST200 looks like something of a classic fast Ford bargain. We all know there aren’t many of those left.

It isn’t perfect, of course. Even in another 20 years, 175,000 won’t seem especially low mileage, so anyone with hopes of bagging a barely used minter best look elsewhere. Hopefully the ST200 lived the life a fast estate should, taking lots of people and things to lots of faraway places, making a nice noise in the process and travelling more than fast enough. It also doesn’t have an MOT right now, and the last ticket expired in 2020. Which is quite a long time ago. That said, the first line of the ad is promising a new one on the completion of a sale, and anything that does require sorting could be used as a good negotiating tool. It’s hardly like the average car buyer will be clamouring for a 24-year-old Ford Mondeo estate, after all. But if you know about ST200s - and are aware that there might be as few as 15 wagons left - then you’ll probably be a little more intrigued.

Furthermore, what MOT history there is looks encouraging, with lots of green, several first-time passes without advisories during the 2010s and no mention of rust. The Mondeo is likely to need some fettling to bring it back to its best, but not a total recommissioning. Seems to present well enough in the pics, too; the rear arches aren’t brilliant, but find a Ford of this era with good ones. In the plus column the ST200 can boast nicely preserved wheels, a decent interior and paintwork that only looks a proper polish away from looking great again.

Don’t forget the £4k thing, either. At a time when a Sierra RS500 can command £350k, those fast Fords that remain attainable and accessible are to be cherished. An ST200 is never going to be a megabucks classic, because there’s not the allure of the homologation cars, yet the fast Mondeos will always survive as reminders of the time when the hotted up repmobile was an essential part of every line-up. And Ford made some of the best. With a little bit of love this could surely be put back into regular service if desired - what’s another few thousand miles on 175k? - as well as used for Ford fairs across the land. With the family, for the really keen. All the Cossies will look positively common by comparison.

Always liked these. When I worked for a company with a long company car list quite a few dumped their BMW/Audis for one of these.

Absolute minger! £4k I wouldn't part with 400 rupees for it. Anyone who pays anything like the money they're asking needs to come and look in my garage, I have some classic antiques going cheap!!

I'm a fan of these, but then I did run an ST220 for a few years. I particularly like the back end of these, looks better than the hatch IMO.

Both rear arches are full of rust....and the angle of the dangle of the rear bumper is odd...Optimistic pricing at £4k...

Rear quarter panel not a pretty sight either, including the filler cap area.I agree with most of comments now appearing and, as an afterthought, wonder whether this example might surface again in a few weeks, tidied up ( probably superficially) in a ‘ specialist’ showroom against the inevitable all white background at an inflated funny money price and a spiel detailing the Mondeo ‘s history in keeping with the Fast Ford syndrome. Incidentally ,they were good drives’ cars in the Parry - Jones era. You saw it here first!

Ok it is an older car but 176k miles plus rear arches full of rust, £4k seems optimistic to say the least

Boss in a previous job had one as a company car which I regularly used to use around the Milton Keynes area. It used to run out of brakes very quickly! Nice car to drive though.

Might be a neighbours car, he had one on the drive for years (alongside a couple of old bentleys often kept covered), the garage had the interesting stuff (Ferrari and Porsche). It dissapeared fairly recently and we are pretty close to that dealership. I dont know him but have heard that he was in the car sales world for years so would have local contacts.

MOT history fits to as it rarely moved.

Always liked them as an idea (fast estate) but wouldnt want to own one myself.

Unlike other commentators, I've rather a soft spot for the MK2 Mondeo in general (and the MK6 Escort too, come to that). However, the ST200's big wheels and body kit, especially in this shade of "notice me!!!!" blue, really don't work for me, especially in a car which wasn't that quick even by the standards of the time. It all just feels a bit Ali G.

This engine in a Ghia X I could behind. This car, not so much.

Eeep, those rear arches are going to be some work. They do show worse than other areas, but I bet the seams to the boot floor are also very crusty - it then becomes a fair old job with a welder. With that rust showing and having been mothballed, plus the mileage, it's a £1k-£1.5k car for someone that's keen, IMO.

Looks like a bit of a nail that one!

The Mk1/2 Mondeo is a bit of a nostalgia car for me though because my dad had them when he was a sales rep while I was little, complete with the big car phones. For one of his jobs he had one wrapped in the BTCC livery, and having a racing car on the drive was the coolest thing ever as a 5 year old!

Seems to be a lot of hate for these cars, this particular one and it's price, I get, but for the ST Mondeo estate, I don't get, no it isn't that fast, but it's fast enough, they drive brilliantly, according to all the contemporary reviews, and in hatch variant raced in the BTCC so had racing pedigree. Personally I like it, especially so in this colour and whilst running a V6 is a little beyond me, at sensible money, this could be great. If shed money and with an MOT it'd be a different proposition all together. But I still don't get the hate for it's type, a pretty good looking fast ish estate to my eyes.

Not for me. Always liked the ST220 in the next gen shape and saw one today, I think they've aged well in the styling department but never owned one.
