What is a Limousine?
Discussion
I would say that a limousine is an extended wheelbase vehicle, one that has been modified with an additional section inserted, or at the very least a factory built long wheelbase version of a standard wheelbase vehicle.
But it would seem that for many people any large luxury car is a limousine?
For me, a 7 series, S class or XJ is not a limo, even if being used as such, but a LWB 7 series, S class or XJ is a limo, a stretched Lincoln certainly is.

But many would say that both are. What's your definition?

It’s not just a stretch car. Funeral cars are closer to minibuses than limos.
I’d say the top line lwb cars from BMW, Maybach etc could be counted as limos as you’re expected to have a driver and you can practically live in the back.
Real question is are those luxe fitted out vans that are popular now limos?

Just shown Mrs Bobbers this thread, I think she may be right in saying that the top is in fact a stretched limousine and the lower is a standard limousine, clarifying that 7 series BMW, S Class Merc, Maybach would be classed as a limousine.
This. We now call them all limos, and "stretched" has fallen by the wayside. That said I certainly wouldn't consider any standard wheelbase car a limo, even in the case of Phantom/Mulsanne.
What prompted my topic is that in New Zealand there are a lot of Toyota Centurys with a fair sized JDM scene, many of them have heavily tinted windows. Limousines are exempted from their MOT regulations on tinted windows.
It seems some testers are passing Centurys with heavy tints because it's a limo, whilst others are failing them because it's not a limo. So there's a debate going on about what is a limousine? Thing is though, their regulations define a limousine with a helpful silhouette drawing of one for guidance, the drawing is of the familiar stretched limousine with an additional centre section.
So it's back to stretched limousine, but what's an unstretched limousine then? Anyone with tints on a large car could claim limo exemption.

LWBs are not limos.
Limos have a divide between driver / passenger compartments.
Ah I hadn’t considered that, so even something like a Phantom wouldn’t be a limo?Limos have a divide between driver / passenger compartments.
