Watching bbc news now and there banging on about road saftey outside a school somewhere.
It appears the school as a gang of "junior PCSO's" about 8-10 years old wearing high viz jackets with a police crest. Apparently these vastly experienced drivers with loads of legal powers stand outside the school telling motorists off for speeding and bad parking.
What a bloody stupid idea, puts them at risk, and how the hell does an 8 year old know if a car is speeding or not?
Is this a one off idiotic scheme or is it in operation in a few places??

The cost of a few small high-viz jackets?
The kids who are put into a schemes like this are (often) the ones the police and council are trying to stop being the next generation of criminals.
By empowering some one who is "Criminally" minded? Infact, scrap that... Empowering kids? The kids who are put into a schemes like this are (often) the ones the police and council are trying to stop being the next generation of criminals.

Kids, ideal people to judge driving standards
Why not teach kids not to run into the road etc, oh silly me it's never your own fault is it?
in the report i saw they said that kids were involved because of mp3 players and phones, then went on about drivers going too fast etc, so in fact glossing over the responsibility that the pedestrian has.

also i know i am fully grown (in all directions unfortunately), but i manage to walk to and from railway stations on my commute too and from work using my phone as an mp3 / audible device wearing headphones and i have yet to be run over and killed, i just check before i cross the roads in both directions. i remember the green cross man.

Are you sure they weren't "real" PCSO's ? They usually go 'round in a "gang". It's progress you see ... someone once worked out that 2 or 3 PCSO's are cheaper than a bonefide police officer.Mathematics fail !!!
Calm down dears, the ones round my way are accompanied by actual police officers. They're not standing on the hard shoulder of the A3!
As for how they know if a car's speeding, the little darlings down the road from me had a couple of actual radar guns. Would still have been interesting to see someone get pulled over and given a ticking off.

Or to brainwash with 'speed kills' propaganda...
Know what? I love fast driving and cars, anything cars. But even I can see the value in a 'speed kills' mentality where you have children and vehicles. Not 'speed kills' at the expense of common sense on both sides, but in addition.
I've mentioned this in other threads, I've good friends that have three kids. The middle one that's about to get to secondary school has been involved in one of these school gate operations.
They've been involved in three accidents in cars driven by their parents. So where are they more at risk, at school or around the school gates or when they're passengers in cars driven by their parents?
NUDGE, waive IPT to those passing the IAM and RoSPA tests.
A relative was staying from Australia a few years ago and I visited them in the late 90s in Australia. They've an ingrained anti-speeding mindset, and I can see that relative that has 3 sons is particularly aware of the dangers of younger, inexperienced drivers. When I was pushing on on very quiet dual carriageways they started heavy breathing, they didn't get start hyperventilating but they got a bit panicky at anything over 70.

Assuming they're not in danger of being run over, I don't see what the problem is? As I see it anything that reminds drivers of the vulnerability of children is a good thing.
Of course, that won't stop some people becoming inexplicably angry, but that's life.

I predict many cases of boiling urine and apoplexy!

I am all for keeping children of the roads at the age they are now, or even when they are adults, it creates more road space for myself and like minded speed freaks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It appears the school as a gang of "junior PCSO's" about 8-10 years old wearing high viz jackets with a police crest.
