Having just returned from a little trip of over 1500 miles in mine I can safely say it is neither thirsty nor slow. I averaged almost 35mpg over the entire trip with a worst tank average of 32.64mpg. From Devon to Glasgow it managed 36.55mpg (Verified the old fashioned way, not the trip computer) despite being stuck in horrific traffic pretty much from Birmingham to the Lake District, had I had a clear run through I'm confident I'd have had made it with the 38-39 showing on the trip computer until the traffic reared its ugly head.

I didn't manage a single tank with a range of under 500 miles.

And as it was a trip around, among other places, the beautiful Scottish highlands, the performance was regularly called into use and there was nothing it wouldn't overtake with ease.

Gorgeous.

At £5k it's quite resistable though. At £3-3.5 though, it'd definitely be in with a shout of being good value. I'd still be budgeting for replacing the tank though, <2k miles pa is a lot of sitting still and rusting from within through condensation.

Quick question for those threadists who are 'trade' or 'ex-trade'; where do the likes of Old Colonel, GMS and U7 source their stock from? Dealer links? Or just built up such a reputation that they find people offering cars to them?

The Colonel tried to buy my E34 from the chap I bought it from. They wanted him to drive up from Dorset to Herts though, and I nipped in and nabbed it. Not sure this is their usual method; if you are genuinely an old colonel with a one owner E32 though, I doubt you'll be aware of their existence sufficiently to call them.

Impressive. I drove from Newcastle to Luton the other night for work, using a 2.0 Mondeo TDCi and I did a round trip of 540 miles on a full tank with the computer showing about 20 miles of range left when I got back.

Your E34 is lovely Jobbo, doesn't surprise me the Old Colonel would be interested in it. I doubt you will lose any money on it.

Yep, both of those, plus them scouring the classifieds and Ebay for cars being offered privately, being offered stock through their trade contacts (both dealers and mechanics) and making offers to less established traders offering them.

People looking to sell their cars will generally go on Autotrader to begin the pricing exercise (or after being kicked in the pills by a mainstream dealer who knows no more than what CAP says it's worth), whereupon they will happen across a few dealers asking higher than average prices for a car such as their own. Simple greed/common sense ensures they'll contact such sellers.

E38 update

Just had a couple of hundred miles under it's wheels this weekend on a trip to Stratford and around the Cotswolds

Can be hustled along a twisty lane much more successfully than you'd imagine.
Economy about 24mpg
Girlfriend very much won over, ability to cruise at 80mph most appreciated.
Boot will take a full sized gigging piano in it.
Filling up takes ages and comes in at £115.
Still love it
