We've had a mk4 Golf TDI in our family since 2003. It's a 1998 car, now with over 150k on the clock and going very well. Routinely serviced with consumables replaced when required. Beyond that, I've replaced both front wings as they rusted. Cost £70 from ebay. It's had some suspension bits and pieces, but is still on the original clutch/flywheel and returning 50+ mpg. Cracking little car. biggrin

That sums it up pretty well for me.

I've had a look at a few over recent weeks. The ones that look and feel "right" have had frightening amounts of money, time and effort spent resolving bork. And the rest are unloved dogs.

The interiors seem to show their age very badly. The alloys seem unusually susceptible to corosion. And electrical components seem to take their inspiration from Lucas. You get the real sense that VAG lost their way, building a car that looked the part but fell woefully short of the "if only everything in life was as reliable..." mantra.
Rather get the SEAT of the same era, better looking, better spec, probably cheaper and oddly enough better put together. The early 2000's saw major labor problems for VW in South Africa, where a good number of the right hand drive MKIVs were produced, hence the interesting and variable build quality.

Another option is the SKODA 130 TDI or VRS, again cheaper and probably better put together than the VW.

If someone is feeling brave, there is an '03' 2L GTI that's been sat At work since aug/sept last year. Apparently engine light is on, they guy replaced the car with a mk5 golf and it hasn't turned a wheel since. I imagine it'll be cheap. Very cheap.

Can ask if anyone wants?

Oh and also going shortly is a 35k mile 106 Quicksilver on a W. Guy wants £1200

nono

It is in the top 5 best proportioned 4-seater sports cars ever to have left Italy and the fact that many don't see it, makes it even cooler.

The Prius isn't uncool because it looks hideous (it doesn't), it's because it's a car designed for and owned by fking morons.

Not really my cup of tea Woody but I can see the appeal, certainly one of the better looking Supra's i have seen.

Really?

I guess like any cheap hatchback, there will be a fair selection of dogs owned by people who neither know, nor care.

However, a quick look at the bottom end of the MKIV market reveals an 'impressive' amount of high milers (i.e. 150k+) which appear to still have some life left in them.

Granted, some of the elctrics can be dodgy, but otherwise they're very well built cars IME. And the (<150bhp) 1.9TDI is quite bomb proof.

A UK Turbo model that is standard holds great appeal. As does a Standard R33 GTR

Sadly, neither exist anymore

Eta: it would appear I'm wrong, but with a £15k premium.

I think part of the appeal is that for every one nice one there are 30 horrific examples and I maintain that the basic shape is very well resolved, especially without the rear wing.

And the power. That's quite appealing too. hehe

Is that "I've never been to the 'Ring before" Clarkson, as seen driving an oil burning Jag?

Been there. Done that. Awesome. Wife hated it. Hence B10 V8. My advice. Buy a cheap standard one (£6k) and spend £5k making it terrifyingly fast.
