Can I turn this around? When there's a fast car blocking the outside lane, there's nothing funnier than baiting them into a daft maneuver and then chuckling as they get pulled by the rozzers around the next corner wink

But being serious for a minute, there is very rarely any nobility in taking the bait. I would suggest that if you have an M5, you have little to prove performance wise and doing so at every provocation is a little...common.

You should have just moved out the way? as I'm sure it wasn't your intention but you have made it sound slightly like because you have a real M5 then lesser models should stay behind you?

Surely whatever car is following you is irrelevant? you were in his way and he was wanting to go faster than you. Poor show on his part for tail gaiting you though!

Minding my own business in fast lane of dual carriageway (fortunate enough to drive an F10 M5). Travelling "around" the speed limit, traffic well spaced and flowing freely, slowly passing the traffic in slow lane.

Notice silver E60 5 series approaching from behind at speed, M badge on the front grille, immediately recognize its not an M5 from its mirrors and front fog lights, comes right up my rear, far too close for comfort, literally 3-4 yrds maximum, wants me to move over I presume even though I am still passing cars in slow lane myself and to move over would then slow me down.

Do I pull over and let it go safe in the knowledge that we both know who's got the M car or should I rise to the challange and floor it?

I finally let him pass; another M badge on rear, looked like a 530d. He shot past me with a cloud of oil burning smoke and a look of utter contempt in my general direction.

How would anyone else respond in this situation? I think I did well to keep the boy racing tendencies of my youth at bay.
The key is to ignore them, if you are being baited it is either someone who is prepared to lose their license or undercover traffic.... though saying that the other day there was an M badged e39 530d. It had no 530d signs but it was a 530d Sport, similar colour to mine. Onto the dual carriage way we pull along side, he looks over I nod back give it a moment of throttle then pull in front so he can see it was a real M not a bloody fake. For a second I felt good, then I felt like a knob.

slow down or even brake test?
Does anyone do this when driving a nice car? Not sure I'd want to have to repair my M5 just to teach some fool that his brakes/reaction time aren't as good as they could be.

There's the crux. 'Reponding' displays more insecurities than the driver with fake M car.

Interesting post, given your username. smile

Quick question...how d'you know how insecure the driver of the other car is?

Surely the tailgater in his falsely-badged-to-look-more-like-a-more-powerful-model is the insecure one? eh? EH?

3 answers possible. Perm 1 biggrin

1. It may have been a chipped 535D, truly a car deserving of an M badge particularly as it has so much torque blah blah blah etc etc etc BARF! So you were lucky he didn't 'hand you your arse" (I think that is in the correct vernacular?)

2. You should have faced up to the inner child and gone like a dingbat leaving him to contemplate his rude approach to your rear.

3. He may have been a regular geezer making due progress who comes across a wobbler doing 72mph in the 3rd lane that won't move over and is actually unaware of what the car is that he is now stuck behind. He does scan the rear parcel shelf for a trilby as it looks like it is being pedalled by an OAP biggrin

3 is of course ridiculous as he had an M badge on his car, marking him out as a ballbag par ecxllence who was surely trying to demonstarte how well his 5 grand pooper compares to your 80 grand luverly! biggrin

Never forget insecurity fuels brilliance.

Nothing more dull than measured response.

I would use the power of my car to pull away from the imposter. He would not keep up with the acceleration of the M5. I would then safely slow down, pull in to the slow lane and wait for him to catch up ,smile at him.... well snigger actually and let him pass by. Tail gating is really the sign of very poor driving .
To avoid getting to silly speeds, slow down before doing this.

(this is puerile behaviour and nto to be recommended)

Yeah....your right, sod that.

I'd drop it down a couple cogs, rev blipping ostentatiously.
And then pull into the slow lane observing the NSL.

Pull over to inside lane and accelerate just hard enough to keep him along side, look over to catch his eye............Then nail it.
Job done.

If they're following at an unsafe distance then I'll swiftly dispatch of them and then move over at the first safe opportunity. Two birds, one stone.

If your not going to have a bit of fun why drive an M5. Given that I won't rise to the bait unless it's a challenge.

The R8 I came up behind this morning thought he would lose me in a corner----LOL He soon backed off! Think he had left his bottle at home.

I think they guy behind was tail gating which is not good behaviour.
Clearly in a bit of rush
We've all done a bit of tail gating before.
To just let him past would hardly slowed u down much if any because u can quickly go behind him.
Ur response to let him past so he won't slam into ur rear should u have to slow down was the safer option
Cannot stand drivers that hog the outside lane and don't move over to the inside when safe to do so

A few weeks ago I saw 2012 AM V8 Vantage S on M40 tail gating loads of people getting them to move out of his way
I was leaving suitable distance in front.
Anyway as motorway was a clear I had a cheeky overtake of him. He never passed me till I let him pass me back and kept a distance behind him.

Rise to what challenge?

If you're in the outside lane of the motorway doing slightly over the limit, slowly passing cars and a car travelling faster comes up behind you, when the traffic is well spaced and flowing freely, pull in and let it past? I don't understand why anyone wouldn't?

Nice car by the way, there's a dark grey one around my area that looks lovely.
