Barnes and Noble Nook £29 at currys
Discussion
Well... Finally had mine delivered yesterday, was just settling into it only receive an e-mail just now 'apologizing' (sic) for the fact that I will be experiencing difficulties buying from the shop... Turns out the firmware's US/ CA and won't accept a UK credit card!
Fair play to them for picking up on the issue before I had, but having already waiting nearly 3 weeks now I've got to sodding wait for a bloody replacement, and arse about sending this one back!!
ETA: Could probably fix it myself (especially as I'm planning to root anyway) but given the luck I'm having on this 'project' I daren't tempt any more fate!

So hang on, you can borrow books from the library on one of these thing-how does that work?
If its the same as my Sony Reader, it can be done via Adobe Editions - your download as a limited time DRM against it. Or something.anyone on here actually used it on the nook?

Got an e-mail from Currys to say my Simple Touch is being replaced by a GlowLight at no extra charge. Result! Should arrive tomorrow.
Exactly what I was hoping might happen to me when I saw they were out of stock - instead they sent me a US Simple Touch!... Still, fingers crossed my replacement direct from Nook might be a GlowLight!I just came across this story.

Looks like we might be getting a web browser and email from B&N themselves without any need for rooting!

So the script is:
Get a £29 Nook.
Root it.
Treat it as a kindle?
I download books from various sources and convert them on the net to the format that a kindle likes. Why do I need to root the nook, can't I just transfer the book in the appropriate format to the Nook.
You can simply use Calibre to change the format of the book from epub to mobi so you don't have to root. Rooting makes the device much more capable, ie browsing (limited) or email etc, though if the leaked memo is to be believed and actually comes here soon, then that will be available as standard.Get a £29 Nook.

epub works fine on the nook, no need to convert just drag and drop, via usb.Collected mine from Waitrose last night, ordered on Tuesday when they briefly came back into stock at John Lewis. I've been putting epub files on my iPads for years, but it's not ideal for reading outside. Dragged the same files onto the Nook last night, works great. Can't see the benefit in rooting it, it does everything I want it to out of the box.
Only annoyances so far are how long I had to charge it for the first time before it'd even switch on, and I can't connect my Google account to it (not that there's really any benefit in doing so) as I've got 2-factor authentication enabled and that seems to confuse it.
On the subject of borrowing ebooks from libraries I'd check what content you have available first, my local library (Oxfordshire) has a useless selection of ebook content and an overly complicated DRM system (Overdrive) other libraries seem to have a much better selection.

I don't have a problem with pre-charging, in fact, I expect it these days.Only annoyances so far are how long I had to charge it for the first time before it'd even switch on, and I can't connect my Google account to it (not that there's really any benefit in doing so) as I've got 2-factor authentication enabled and that seems to confuse it.

The benefit of rooting it, I've found, is that there is Kindle content that does work, as there's not a lot on the Nook store.
However, it might not be of much use to my daughter as there's not a lot of content for a 5 year old - Unless someone can, you know, direct me to some kids content - the 4000 odd ebooks I have are of no use to her....

I'd say it's more normal for stuff to come with enough charge to get you started, I had to charge the Nook for about 30mins before it'd even boot. Not a problem really, just nitpicking. The benefit of rooting it, I've found, is that there is Kindle content that does work, as there's not a lot on the Nook store.
I can see how the Kindle app could be useful, but I bought it more as an epub reader, which it seems to do very nicely out of the box.
