Federer tried a different tactical approach in the Rome final, didn't work obviously:

I'm sure none of you will be surprised to learn Murray has withdrawn from RG.

Question is how bad is the back? If he needs an operation, at some point, he would realistically be out for 6 months-ish. Part of me wonders whether he is gambling on long-term fitness to try and win Wimbledon whilst he is at his peak.

Thoughts?

Wise move by Andy. No point going in when you know you are going to further injure yourself. Wimbledon the far more important title, especially for Andy. My money is on Andy or Roger for Wimbledon. I think Roger will put it together for his favourite event.

Can certainly see the logic of him trying a different game plan. Long baseline rallies obviously play to Nadal's strengths so Fed is highly unlikely to beat him playing that way; therefore, a more attacking, aggressive, approach makes sense. However, although Rafa played very well in the Rome final, Roger's execution of that new game plan was pretty awful and will need to be several notches higher if he's to have any chance of beating him in Paris should the two of them meet there. Personally, though, I still think Roger has a mental barrier to overcome when he plays Rafa; from memory it's now 6 years since he beat him in a Grand Slam (Wimbledon 2007?) and for me the major question is does he really believe he can beat Nadal over 5 sets?

Got Roger for £500 at 20-1. He has his best chance to win it this year. It will take something special in the finals, granted. My theory is that Nadal and Novak will knock ten bells out of each other in the semis, leaving Roger in good shape for the win. If Ferrer gets past Roger (really can't see it) then it will take the backing of all the gods to spur him to a well-deserved title.

My outside bets? Tsonga with a bit of belief and a lot of focus, he needs to stop getting involved with the crowd and close out matches however. A very long shot could be Berdych. He has the ability to sneak through the draw and get himself into a good position.

Look at Nadal's record.. it simply won't be bettered in my lifetime hehe

Always amazed Murray doesn't do better on clay - he practised a lot in Spain in his youth and used to be very willing to play a defensive game. Just doesn't seem to have the patience - or the willingness to go forward and finish the point when he's opened the court up. His volleying is seriously under-used, it's the one aspect of his game that is better than his rivals - but he has to believe in it more and not give up the first point he loses from the net.

Monfils doing a great job in ousting Berdych! Seriously talented, easily one of the best athletes on tour... but cursed with the need to prove both gifts during almost every point he plays hehe Conserve your energy young Gael, conserve your energy, it's a long race.

well Monfils is looking pretty good at the moment just took out Gulbis

so will it the same bunch at the end, could Djoker and Rafa knacker themselves out so Fed can sneak another win?! if Djoker beats Rafa I think he has a real chance...Fed will be tested in the next round so we shall see how well he is playing then

They need to implement a solution for the weather
I have number of friends who haven't played their R1 match as of today! So to win a slam these guys need to play two weeks of world-class tennis within 7-8 days.. basically no rest. Tough life.

Very true about Aus, not fair on the players however. The sun is brutally hot in Melbourne in Jan. Players simply shouldn't have to be put in a situation where you are playing best of 5 sets at this level daily. It's all very well for Federer and the gang on the comfy courts with a roof, but everyone else.. not so much.

Speaking of Roger.. I have a very good feeling this is going to be my best bet of the year. I'm thinking I should have put a few more coins on him. He is one of very best at putting himself in position to contend for the title. I am sure he is hoping for absolute carnage in the other half, Rafa isn't getting all his own way in his matches as everyone wants to take him out at RG. It's the ultimate scalp! hehe

ETA: Nadal not happy, rightfully so.

Why do the women get paid the same as men? fking travesty. Their games last about ten seconds and they are st. The big hitters just steam roller everyone. The top 4 or 5 hardly lose a point in a match.

Don't get me started on this one...

Equal money? Equal performance! It simply isn't equal in any way, shape or form. Sexist! Thankfully nobody wants to see best of 5-sets of women's tennis.. paying them a bit more cash to avoid that might just be worth it. The under-marketed and highly underpaid top men's doubles showcase far more skill and quick-fire tennis. I'd rather watch an entire slam of dubs over boring myself to death watching the women screech their way through yet another one-sided match.

Yeah, I said it. hehe

all over, Tsonga played well, Federer so so

I think I would like to see a Djokovic/Tsonga final, much as I like Ferrer I do not think he can beat Nadal or Djokovic, Tsonga as more chance imo

well really I would like to see Haas in the final! better yet Haas and Wawrinka in the semis!!

Passed out early yesterday, woke up to the results. Damn it! biggrin

I'd love Ferrer to come through, but I can't see him getting the job done in the final. Tsonga, he has been through a lot and hasn't given up despite picking up injuries which would have pushed others into retirement. There are quite a few guys in the running now who really deserve a shot at the title. Haas is one of them. 35 years old but probably 28-30 years old if you take into account the amount of down-time through injuries.

Good luck to them all!

Serena wins a semi final 60, 61 in 46 mins. This stage of tournament is supposed to showcase the best four players..

I am going to apply to run a grand slam, just so I can right the wrong of this equal pay nonsense wink
