I bet if someone asks you if you smoke, you say "the odd cigar" rather than "no, I'm a non-smoker" though?
No, I'd say "smoking kills and makes you stink."
Then they'd look puzzled and say "yes, but I asked if YOU smoke..." hehe

Otolith, fair enough. I'd define it as 'someone who smokes' though so my odd cigar makes me a smoker. I go weeks/months between them so no addiction, I'd have thought.

Dunno. I'd define a smoker as 'someone who smokes'. I like the odd cigar so consider myself a smoker. It's not a bad thing, is it??

ETA-NadiR, it would be more like someone who had a glass of wine once a week saying they're a 'non-drinker', for some bizarre reason.
Exactly.

I've also met people who claim to be Vegetarians except they eat fish and chicken. Ooh, and bacon because it's yummy in a sandwich.
I suppose they could or should claim that they don't eat red meat but vegetarian sounds more noble to them somehow as does being a "non-smoker" as far as I'm concerned.

I don't care for one minute what people do but laugh at the hypocrisy the self labeling.

A smoker is someone who smokes regularly and frequently, shirley.

I don't need to put "smoker" on my life insurance if I have a cigar a handful of times per year, and a similar number or drunk fags,do I?

Calling yourself a 'non smoker' while enjoying cigars is like so called vegetarians who eat fish.

I love cigars but haven't had one in over 25 years now. Every time I managed to quit cigarettes, cigars would be my downfall. I'd just convince myself I could live without fags therefore a cigar now and then would be nice. Then the nicotine craving would creep back again and I'd be on the fags once more.

I envy those who can smoke the occasional one though but even now I don't trust myself. My sister is the same with cigarettes. She can have one to be sociable but don't smoke regularly. But then again she as tight as a ducks arse with money, so probably only smoke freebies.

To the OP I would say don't do it. You might be ok but nicotine craving is a real pain to get on top of and far outweigh any enjoyment of smoking.

To hear someone described as "a drinker", one would not expect him to be the kind of person who only ever has a small glass of cream sherry while watching the Queen's Speech on Christmas day.

I had a couple of halls soothers after tolerating the stty air conditioning on a 777 for ten hours the other day.

I'm clearly a junkie.
My take would be that some 'drinkers' become dependent on alcohol, but most people are able to enjoy a drink without it becoming a necessity in their life.

On the other hand 'smokers' are very likely to addicted to nicotine and find that they can't function normally without a constant hit.

That doesn't apply to me.

I had 5 cigars last year.

I don't consider myself a smoker.

Am I in denial? confusedeekhehe

And if that happens, they are a smoker. If they have a couple of cigars a year, they are not.

Never touched a cigarette in my life - not even one drag. But, I've had a few cigars in my time. I stopped because, apparently, they cause throat cancer and there's a history of throat cancer in my family.

Yes indeed. Funny old things the labels we use to describe people. Are members of PH 'motorists' or 'drivers'?

Yes.

If you smoke a cigar, you are not a non smoker.

If you drink alcohol, you are not teetotal.

If you eat meat, you are not a vegetarian.

If you believe in God(s), you are not an Atheist.

Etc.

Reminds me of;

A young man is walking down by the docks one day and decides to stop by a bar and have a beer. He walks into a bar, and sees a grizzled old fisherman, crying into his beer. Curious, the young man sits down and says, “Hey old timer, why the long face?”
The old man looks at him and points out the window, “See that dock out there? I built that dock with my own two hands, plank by plank, nail by nail, but do they call me Simon the dockbuilder? No,no."

The old man continued, “And see that ship out there? I ’ve been fishing these waters for going on thirty-five years! but do they call me Simon the fisherman? No,no. ”

The old man starts to cry again, “But you f*** one goat … ”

Interesting logic, but you've used binary extremes for your analogies which I don't think is appropriate to smoking.

I don't believe someone who smokes a tiny amount is a smoker, I don't believe someone who plays football once every 3 months is a footballer.
