There has been a bit of development on that front, we have had a chat with the bowls club and may be to buy a 1.5m strip of their land to slide the garage over a bit, which should make quite a difference I think. It may also alter the construction of the garage as we are further away from the tree which would save some money and hassle.
That is really good news indeed!! Would an extra 1.5m wide mean it could actually go down the side of the house after all?

No, still down the back, replacing hedges on their side but it does make it a fair bit less intrusive into the garden. It's all still subject to agreement but we got some slightly more positive noises than we were expecting.Would an extra 1.5m wide mean it could actually go down the side of the house after all?
We will be looking to actually buy our tiles on Saturday, are there any things we should be paying particular attention to? We have sort of identified the type we are looking for in most areas, all I really have in mind at this stage is porcelain tiles for the floors, something with a little texture so they are not overly slippery in wet areas.

Take a steel ruler and check they are straight! (you might be amazed)Muncher said:
5.75m x 4.25m internal is the max size you could possibly get beside the house, it's a no go.
I think you'll reset seeing the garage i the back garden over time, and it will devalue the house by making the garden look cramped. If the only problem with the side is the back door then build a small hallway into the garage, so you exit the old back door to the new 1m wide hallway, go straight on (or right) for the garage, or turn left for the back door.
It also gives you utility room options too.
On that basis I'd make a decision to stick it on the side and then make it fit. I fitted my garage on the side BTW, and I'm always glad I did when I look out the back to a nice wide garden.
It just won't fit there I'm afraid, a 1m hall way would give a garage a little less than 3.5m wide. You'll would end up with effectively a single garage. My architect also wouldn't even entertain the idea. I think if we can move the garage across a bit it will give more than enough garden space for most.
Wont a large garage limit the market? Obviously petrol heads would like it but I would have thought that most people would have preferred the larger garden?
Im currently looking for a new house, although smaller than yours. It is surprising the number of people who have converted garages into other rooms which indicates to me garages are less important.
Obviously if you are building your forever home then ignore me.

It's not a forever home but it could be a home for a number of years. It is already relatively narrow, and if the length is reduced it just means the area of gravel in front of it gets larger. I take all of your points but it is difficult to see what the alternative is.Im currently looking for a new house, although smaller than yours. A VX220 is 3.8m long by 1.9m wideWas that before the possible purchase of another 1.5m of land ?
Seriously if it's not the forever house stick it on the side, garages are just not that important to the majority
I don't think they would entertain 1.5m further up due to the layout of their paths and the fact they want to get rid of a hedge and that would take up their flower beds. The green is obviously level but the land drops away into the back garden so a large brick garage has much less impact from that side the further back you go.
Yes a VX isn't a big car but that's not to say I wouldn't want to get something bigger in future. The garage will also serve as the shed holding a couple of bikes, lawn mower etc. I have had 12 years of packing things into a tiny garage, tinkering with the car outside in all weathers, it is such a pain it has to be a decent space that works for me. A future owner could always knock it down if they didn't like it but the remaining garden I think will be fine.

Few more shots, the kitchen is almost entirely boarded now, just a few bits to finish and adjust plus a little round the back door to do.
Most of the upstairs is plastered, the plasterer will be back in 2 weeks time to carry on but has done a very good job from what I can tell.

Looking good, Muncher!
I'm kind of kicking myself for not using the LED recessed strips in our place, which we could have done....actually, I may still since the suspended ceilings aren't up yet.......
BTW, does anyone know why plaster used in the UK is pink? The stuff in our place is white, made by Knauf.

Your wife has a lovely pair of work shoes!
Mine rarely wears any sort of safety equipment during our cottage refurb either and then complains forever about the results!
Thankfully she wasn't doing any work, just a flying visit, we all took the weekend off (the first that I can actually remember) for a wedding on saturday. I've bought her steel toe capped boots but I think she has only worn them once! We did go to look at tiles but pretty much lost the will to live doing it the morning after the wedding.Mine rarely wears any sort of safety equipment during our cottage refurb either and then complains forever about the results!
Guy - yeah they look good, I hope the powerline profiles fit neatly, there is very little margin for error in cutting the slot as the overlap of the almunium is minimal. I also need the Zep2s for downstairs now so will give you a call this week.

Trimless housings are looking good Paul. Really looking forward to seeing the finished job!
Oh and the staircase manufacturers are supplying a taller string on the wall side and routing the groove for a thin aluminium profile in there, I've not been able to find a photo of anyone else doing something like that so will be interesting to see how it turns out...The bowls club have come back to me, they can't do 1.5m as they need enough clearance to get down the path with large equipment but they will enter into discussions for 1m, which will still be useful.
