OT, Sorry to point you out GM but this always seems bizarre to me.

Somebody without a licence so is not allowed on the road is caught and subsequently banned from being on the road. Its not much of a deterrent.
What else can they do?
Not really sure what a good deterrent would be. Just at the moment its 'For doing something your not allowed to do, You not allowed to do it'.

He obviously doesn't value driving very much. A ban is in order.

Like I do now. redface

I just don't want the extra expense involved with even 3 points.

1. Should they decide to go legitimately they can't until the ban has expired.
2. Once they go legitimately they will have to explain the points until they expire.
3. The past ban will all ways be available to the Traffic Commissioners and where Enhanced DBS / CRB is required - as relevant to Driving Occupational and/or Working with Children and Vulnerable Adults.

This is the thing: he isn't. He has no interest in cars or driving at all; he uses a car to get from A to B. Nothing more. All his fines have been for driving round town 38 in a 30 type of stuff.
Probably a good thing for the rest of us then that he's off the road.
Thats what I was thinking, I don't want to share roads with those who have no interest in their own driving skill.

Get them a car with a decent trip computer and offer them 10-1 if they can get the MPG above a pretty challenging threshold

Me too (was only 9 points I think) I never really went back to driving 'normally' after the two years, just carried on with driving safe slow.

I got rid of mine, I started to trust it to warn me, and ended up observing less and speeding more.

The thing that cured me was having a decent car, now I know I can overtake the huge queue of traffic and the caravan at any time, I take way fewer risks. However, he clearly has no clue about driving so I'd agree with the folks who suggest some kind of advanced driving/speed awareness course. I also think that a ban would wake him up. The fact is, whether or not he's interested, in cars or driving to a certain standard, he owes it to other road users.

Cheers

Given what I've read, I think the best thing that can happen is that he continues to speed, and loses his license.

Sounds like an idiot who is completely unaware if his surroundings. Fixed cameras are so easy to see there is no excuse to get caught by them, you deserve a proper punishment. If you can't react to an 8' tall luminous orange box what chance does a pedestrian have.

Tell him to open his eyes and when he sees a camera or other hazard to slow down, not exactly hard is it?
Actually, I've seen quite a few placed in rather sneaky places behind trees etc so not always obvious.

Re the OP, if I'm honest, I'd have started being uber anal about speed limits at 6 points let alone 9.

Personally if I had 9 points then I would consider getting a job overseas where I can either use a foreign licence or it would not be possible to ban a UK licence.

Although my job is reasonably mobile, so moving overseas for a while isn't that outrageous for me.

I'm driving like an old fart on 3 points!! OP, your nephew is a twonk.

There are all types of intelligence; motoring intelligence is the one he most definitely does not have.

In my mid twenties, I picked up 11 points in the space of about 3 months. I spent 2 1/2 years not really driving like Miss Daisy's chauffeur, but making sure that I was never the quickest car on the motorway and being extra observant for plod when going for overtakes etc. The one worry that was always in the back of my mind was getting caught out on a set of traffic lights or something equally silly.

I have had a clean licence for the last 14 years or so, although I do have to attend a little driver awareness course later this month due to travelling ever so slightly too quickly through a specs zone on the M4 frown

Everyone knows the best way to see if a GATSO is working is to speed at it from the opposite way hehe

There's a little "binoculars" icon at the top of the thread so you can watch something without posting in it, if you like.
