Thanks all so far for the suggestions. Serious Sam 1 & 2 I've played and also Singularity. I you can see, I've played rather a lot of shooters, but once I've played them, that's it, I never go back and play them a second time.

But I played Doom 3:BFG for quite a few hours yesterday - that's right up my alley !

Try Just Cause 2. There's a kind of a story, but you mainly run, drive, fly around blowing things up, with total freedom.
That's a very good call. Silly, mindless and addictive carnage smile

Am I the only one who has ever played Postal 2? Postal 3 is a bit rubbish, but 2 had it about right ..

That's messy. I thought BF3 was bad enough when you get a smudge of blood where someone got killed.

A while back I was in a very similar boat.

What worked for me was CoD Bad Company 2 but the Survival Mode smile You just get wave after wave of continually increasingly difficult guys to gun down. Also the Missions are pretty good as well.

And they're all solo.

Filled my run and gun needs for a bit smile

DayZ.

Massive open game world, no plot/story/quests to get in the way. Just try to survive and shoot things (zombies, other players). Seems to meet your requirements.

Team Fortess 2, free off Steam

Non stop killing things, yes it is multiplayer but it is very fun, and free!

got a copy of this from an old mate of mine when it first came out! very amusing for letting off steam but that's about it.

The laughs or looks of disgust when i asked if they had a copy of it in the game shops before i got mine was quite funny.

Using a spade to decapitate someone for me was the most fun on that then kicking it down the street.

+1 for Unreal Tournament, there are a few versions on Steam.

Also Painkiller, brain free action against hordes of demons. An HD remake is in Game for a tenner.

I don't think I've played a better game than the original unreal tournament, lost a truly ridiculous amount of time playing that, and its still good fun just going up against bots.

Aliens Vs Predator
Crysis
Far Cry (the original one) played this recently and it still looks pretty good and is fun to play.
Bioshock(1-3) - Not quite a corridor shooter but pretty good.

Another vote for Painkiller, also Just Cause 2 which has already been mentioned is a good call.

All time favourite game Dynasty Warriors! Now you have to find a good vintage as a lot play a bit different to one another but that is about the most switched off slasher game you can have without going to Call of Duty. GoW3 is a good shout too!

I've got the last of us and played 4 hours with a friend last night. But I probably won't finish it off as it requires way to much thinking and stealth and unlike Metal Gear Solid you simply can't progress if your bit willing to be mindful of your actions.

So DW6, GOW3 or COD is where you'd be happiest I reckon.
