In a recent media interview he claimed that a 1/4 of WOW is completly finished. Now a number of other pages may be drafted and in editing but WOW is still far from a completed book.
Interesting, do you have a link for that? It goes somewhat against his comments in 2012. From what little I know of the writing process for a quarter of a book to be completely finished the rest of the book must be approaching finished, essentially complete barring polish and continuity checking. You seem to be implying (and excuse me if I've got this wrong) that you can complete 25% of a book with only drafts of other parts.
GRRMs writing process doesn't fit that bill. I'm not sure it does for any professional writer.

I would agree that WOW and ADOS may be massive books but he has said before how the story grows in the telling and even two 1,000 page books may not be enough to finish the tale.
I thought that was his initial reasoning for ASOIF turning from a trilogy to a 7-parter? It doesn't follow that the revised plan would suffer the same creep. It's not a government IT project!JagLover said:
I would disagree on AFFC/ADWD there are some very interesting storylines for some of the characters, and that would really translate well to the screen (Cersei, Arya, Jon, Theon, Jamie), others for well established characters are frankly dull and I'm not sure how critical many of the new characters are.
You may be right but I think a talented screen play writer could tease out the nuanced stuff. Maybe they should hire someone with that type of experience
There are a few plot lines that are less obvious where they're leading (maybe nowhere but why include them?) but I didn't find any of book 4 or 5 dull. I think there's a risk that the subtler bits might not sit well with a lazy TV audience though.JagLover said:
If they can keep up the quality I see no reason why this show should be cancelled ahead of time (this must be one of HBO's biggest successes by now), but to keep up the quality they need to condense AFFC/ADWD
How does condensing it fit with the planned number of seasons?Given how much is cut out for the TV screenplay from the books I doubt there will be a lack of good material for the coming series.
It'll certainly be interesting to see how this pans out - there's so much speculation around I guess it can only be a good thing to keep the fan-base keen.
If you haven't seen it you could also try.

I don't know what GRRM's approach is. But bear in mind that many of the finished chapters (and ones he has read out at various conventions/Tours etc) are ones bumped back from ADWD.

As of October 2012, the Winds of Winter release date was still a long way off -- Martin announced he had written about 400 pages out of 1500, out of which around 200 were "really finished." Nevertheless, in the same interview, he said that "the sixth volume won't be released in 2012 or in 2013. I really look forward to publishing it in 2014, but I am really bad for predictions... when I finish this saga I will be judged for the quality of the books, not for the speed of my writing

AFFC/ADWD are massive books but don't actually progress the plot very far.ASOS was only 920 pages but looks like it will have one season and at least another 2/3s of S4 devoted to it and really needs that due to the sheer number of key events.
If WOW and ADOS revert to the previous pace, but are as large as what is being talked about (1,000-1,500 pages each) then the producers are going to need ALLOT of space to convert them adequatly, particularly as they will presumably contain the hoped for resolution. If they reach the end of AFFC/ADWD at the end of S5 (and heavily condense them to do so) then that only leaves them between two or three (depending on which producer you listen to) seasons to film the remainder of the story.
Basically they can heaviliy condense AFFC/ADWD and still be left rushing through the remaining plots. Think of where all the characters are placed at the end of ADWD and try and work out how far they are from the likely eventual end game for each character.

Currently watching 'The Vikings' as a form of post Game of Thrones methadone. Does the job, but not as good.

It's all guesswork, before the
wedding, who would have guessed Robb's endgame has pages to go?I'll have to comment after I have reread the series. Sometimes Danni's story feels isolated. A DWD season would certainly swing it back her way.
Regarding the popularity of GoT I read an article recently that it was already HBOs second most watched show behind The Sopranos and was expected to overtake that later this year. In terms of popularity I think even HBO and the producers have been surprised just how popular it has been
Its pretty mainstream now, even Sniffpetrol are cracking jokes about it. Its been a sofa gag on the Simpsons as well.

Note to whoever is/was responsible for 'The White Queen', please go and watch the first 3 seasons of GOT to see how it should be done - what a waste of an hour. Series link cancelled.
Wasn't it just drivel - a romantic story aimed at ladies (white Queen has a nice chest though
)Interesting that the only redeeming feature a GOT fan sees is the Queen's 'chest', though.
A good job you're not all watching GOT for the Tit count
What was it? 127 in 5 minutes?M.
