Top-fuel dragster attempts land speed record on the Minmus salt flats!

It ended in a very big crash biggrin
Minimus is an interesting environment for rovers the lack of gravity being a real problem for keeping them wheels down.

Got down to Minimus last night but a carelessly placed landing leg meant I couldn't open the door. biggrin

I'm going to have a try at a rover today.

Spreading the PH word.

Finally remembered to take a screenshot whilst on Duna.

Also managed a landing on Ike for the first time today, so thought I'd plant a flag there too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I've got enough fuel to get back, as I made a bit of a mess of the intercept to get there in the first place.

OK anyone know of a good tutorial as I cannot get the hang of docking with mechjeb 2!

Got this a couple of days ago. Spent ages trying to hand-fly rockets into orbit, eventually managing a (very) elliptical one. Only then did I look on here and realise that there's an orbital mechanics computer onboard that calculates the burn-time and attitude for you!

I've got one poor Kerbal in orbit around the Sun at the moment. I put him EVA so that he can at least get a better view. I hope he has enough toilet paper until I can figure out how to rescue him.

I've not used MechJeb, but my understanding is that it's supposed to make things a lot easier than trying to do things manually. The only tutorials I have seen so far for docking are for manual flying. That's not to say there aren't tutorials out there for mechjeb assisted docking, but I haven't seen any.

Is it the actual docking you are struggling with, or the rendezvous that you need to do before docking?

No I can rendezvous to within 30 metres but then it all goes horribly wrong.

Rendezvous to 100m, select docking port on target ship, press "dock". Make cup of tea and put "Blue Danube Waltz" on Hi Fi...

Download the ORDA add on and fit the 3rd control chip, it pretty much automates docking (even has a teliport to docking button) providing you have RCS Fuel onboard its easy. Use mechjeb etc for orbital opperations if you need it. Just dont forget to put plenty of electrical power onboard your space ship if your using these add ons.

So after a little break I am back to KPS. and I see they now added some flags and naked seats!
I built a space shuttle with just a seat on top of the fuselage smile

I have already made a few rockets capable of getting to any planet without the need for a space-station, but never really tried bringing anyone back from a planet. Any tips? do you guys have some sort of orbiter and lander set up? or do your landers have enough fuel left to take off from planets such as duna and get back to earth?

Apart from Mun and Minmus, which are easy to get to and back from with one craft, the only planet I have visited so far is Duna and it's moon. With those I have used a separate lander and when it gets back to orbit and docks with the mother ship, I transfer any fuel it has left over before detaching it to leave behind. Even then, my mother ships have been tight on fuel to get back, so I am still in the process of tweaking the design.

ok so you have to design in a way that the mother ship has a habitation module as well as the lander then and both have a docking port? I take it wen you jettison the mother ship it does not become debris then?

Just got my first lander on the Mun. Not going to lie, landing it wasn't straightforward. I actually rolled the lander twice but managed to get it back on its feet!

And also: People who are not going into space today:

Ooops. Wobbly launch clamps + lack of vectoring engines = bad times.
This terrible accident has at least resulted in a large investment into capsule escape systems and learning what action groups do smile

Now that might be where I am going wrong. The manual says to do all of the above but also to select the dock on MY ship and click "control from here". Then they just sit looking at each other for a bit then drift away.

Could this be the problem?

No, you need to do all of that. I did it last night and it worked fine. Did you have enough electricity/RCS fuel?

Well I didn't do the "control from here" bit and it work fine so I guess that was my problem. Thanks for the help all.

I found that Mechjeb docking doesn't work so well anymore either, used to work fine.
