The WRX is quite softly sprung as is the Focus ST. You can't really go wrong with either.

Thank you, appreciate that.

Why do people complain about imprezas being so stiff then?

The STi is stiffer but the dampening is far from bonecrunching.

Perfect, stretching the truth plays a part here I'm sure, thanks for all the info.

I found the Cupra R 225 far stiffer and less dampened than an STi.

I've been tempted to look at these, you see loads in the elec blue, and they do look smart and I'm told go well.

Evo 8 if you say you can stretch to 10k for amazing. Vey capable and generally reliable car if bought well. Offset by challenging running costs if used daily.

An Impreza was on my list of cars to buy at some point until they appeared with alarming frequency in the "performance bargain high bork factor" (or something like that) thread. I was aware of the 2.5 being a bit rubbish but I was surprised at the earlier 2l turning up.

The 2.0turbo imprezas are very reliable. Expensive to repair if they go wrong but very reliable generally.

As a matter of interest the people recommending these, are you talking petrol or diesel version or are both quite good, they are on my radar too.

For me it would be petrol and a remap. 197 to 250bhp quite easily.

The diesels are easier to find but cost more to buy and meh to diesel unless you do 15k miles a year.

you're in a similar position to what ill be looking for in a few months. If its not your main family car id go for a 5 door mk7 fiesta ST, they are starting at around £8k I think (not sure when the 5 door was made tho)

or if you need more space a late mk2.5 focus ST seems to be my ideal daily fun-ish but comfy car. gotta be worth it for the lovely 5pot engine. or if you can find a tidy one, a 130i would be great option.

if you need lots of space id defo go for a Octavia vrs for a reliable fast dad-mobile, but maybe not so much fun to chuck about.

for the bottom £5k budget id be tempted by a FN2 civic type R, just for damn reliability of them. I just cant be doing with having cars let me down when i have family shizzle to deal with.

I've always found the Mondeo the better car out of the two the only bad thing about the Mondeo is trying to find one, as well as being able to map to a healthy 270bhp they have the potential to unlock a bit of 5 Cylinder warble.

I'd look for a 130i - in fact I nearly bought one earlier this year, but was just too slow making that call. banghead

Went a bit more practical in the end and bought an E91 325i - but early 330is use the same engine as the 130i so might be worth a look.

Still enjoy the search - that's part of the fun of changing cars!
