Doing my usual evening trawl of Autotrader for potential future purchases and the 340i caught my eye. Nice bit of poke but looks similar to a 318, so to most people it won’t stand out.

Having chipped a few cars in the past with good levels of success, I always check what the likes of Superchips can get out of the engine. Whilst i’m sure the results will be on the positive side they claim to get 434bhp out of the engine with a simple £500 remap.

Is such a big power increase likely to turn the clutch or gearbox to mush? £20,000 car plus £500 remap sounds quite appealing to me.

It will be fine but just increases wear of all the usual components . Not hard to get that really with turbo chargers .

Same engine and similar state of tune to the M140i, which will achieve ~450bhp from a cheap remap.

Less impressive but more surprising is the 114i. It uses the same turbocharged 1.6-litre Peugeot engine as the 116i, 118i and 120i. In the 114i, it's de-tuned to just 100bhp. A cheap remap will more than double its factory power output.

I would take those graphs and claims with a pinch of salt.

348bhp on the stock map? Hmmm

I've seen a few 340i on a dyno putting out between 330 and 340hp with the stock map - it appears BMWs figure of 322 is a bit on the conservative side.

Yep, same with the old N54 335i, which invariably dyno'd more than BMW figures.

Strangely, the later N55 35i engines always seemed to be about bang on to BMW's figures when dyno'd in stock form.

I would still be wary of too big claims from most of the 'cheap' chip tuners on an otherwise stock engine, as the stock BMW intercoolers and other parts can't support some of these higher claimed figures and the ECU will soon knock back the power/torque figures to protect the engine.

Spoke to a 340i MSport Owner at a recent local car show. His had 390 BHP , confirmed on a rolling road and it was all BMW Motorsport Performance add ons add the Factory .

What motorsport add ons come from the factory? It's not even an M lite never mind an M car or a Motorsport BMW (race car)

Probably meant the MPPSK (M Perf Power & Sound Kit) it's dealer fit but bumps the power up to 360bhp officially although they seem to produce more when put on a dyno.

The main reason I went for mine was the way it blends into all the 320d driving about, it's very subtle and no one expects it to move as well as it does.

I've got an m140i at the moment with the same B58 engine. Was considering a remap but was worried about potential damage.

Stumbled across Tom Wrigley performance and their shop car which is an m240i. With a hybrid turbo, decat and uprated radiator for the charge cooler it's running 700bhp on an internally stock engine and autobox.

Engine and box both capable of big power so a stage 1 map doesn't seem likely to cause issues.

That’s the biggest selling point for me. Having disturbed 4 blokes with balaclavas on my drive when I had a Golf R, subtle is good.

Similar story here tbh, I've not experienced it but I'd rather avoid it.

I'm waiting out the warranty before I start with the mods but everything I'm reading so far is sounding good regarding the engine & box.
