Any mot due from April onwards will be extended for 6 months until further notice
This obviously won't go on forever

I 100% after the current situation is resolved this will end
So say it's all clear in June they will announce all MOT tests from July 1st onwards will keep current expiry

I'd imagine the extension's will be done in a .block basis
E.g everything due in next two weeks Weill be updated
Then 2 week after repeat process for following two weeks

I still don't understand what the 6 months means.

Does it mean, if it was due to expire on 1st May, it now expires 1st November, or does it mean it expires 30th September when the 6 month exemption period ends?

And presumably if you do get your car MOT'd during the exemption period, the annual cycle of renewal will remain as normal (i.e. not extended).

Not true. It's not until further notice. It explicitly says that this measure will be in place for 12 months. So, ANY MoT that expires after 30th March 2020 until 30th March 2021 on a light van, car or motorcycle will get a 6 month extension. Private use only that is, commercials and taxis have more periodic safety checks.

Yes it means exactly that, it will expire 1st November, I think it is supposed to mean you stay at home and don't go off to the local garage to spread/receive CV19 . If you check your MOT history it will update to the new expiry date soon.

They have also advised us to stop issuing certificates now and direct people to the MT history site and download their own .

Direct replacement H1/H4 which are LED replacing halogens. I assume these are MoT fail? I put them in my 2000 Audi and its great having modern-standard lighting, the cut off is clean too, not like the dodgy xenon aftermarkets from 10 years ago.
Sorry missed this one, If you mean LED's to replace H4's, I think you are OK, the only RFR's I can see are for HID units.

Last MOT done for now as we close down today. It was a difficult decision but I think it’s best for us and our families. To all my fellow testers, garage owners and indeed anyone in our trade, I hope you all stay safe. Hopefully we will all get to the other side of this and continue doing what we do.

Well done for going as long as you have, people were in a bind if their MoT expired today or tomorrow. I believe part of the intention of the extension is that key workers do not now have to get an MoT on their car, which would be difficult if places are closed, whether for their owners safety or if the workers therein.

It's difficult to target specific workers, and most other people need cars to fetch food and medicine so it's a coverall extension for all vehicles. A good measure I think.

There will be cars out there who's MoT expired in the last few months who don't even realise it, until they find they can't buy VED. Happened to a buyer I know. frown No, not me!

I expect there may be some places open to carry out MoT test, the same places that do safety checks on commercial vehicles perhaps? Because they are still required, although PMI intervals can be extended up to 50% to a maximum of 17 weeks.

Managed to get the Wife’s car MOT’d yesterday (typically missed the 6 month extension by a couple of days). She jumped in her car and we drove straight home, but as she went leave noticed a gift bag in the passenger well. On inspection there was a candle, a wrapped chocolate lolly and a couple of other little bits, so she rang the garage to ask if someone had left it in there by mistake and they replied, “no it’s a gift for yourself”confused Obviously in these times it’s gone straight in the bin, but very, very weird.

Truck garages can't MOT cars. Unless there is a (car) test lane in there and a nominated car tester. I've not know that to be the case in any i've worked in.
And HGV and Trailer MOT's are affected by this as the DVSA have called it a day in the last couple of weeks.

Depends on the commercial vehicles vans and pick up are considered commercial there are loads of transit centres around the country which do mot just like me. We official shut up on Thursday however I left Tuesday as we run out of work tbh was expecting to stay open but glad we closed.
Stay safe all the mot testers and members that have commented on this thread. Hopefully we all be back to work end of next month.

We closed yesterday, the last day we washed and leathered all cars that where at the garage, I nice surprise for the last customers, some took longer to do than the work, must have picked the dirtiest cars!!

Take care all.

Yeah I don't even (subconsciously) consider vans as 'commercial'.
They obviously are to most normal people, but someone says commercial to me, i think of 'Big Lorry!'.

Yea it is a broad brush commercial vehicle you can have a fiesta van which is commercial vehicle which is no real difference over a standard fiesta apart from no rear windows and no rear seats.

13L, 6 cylinders + and 2000 NM of torque minimum = commercial! Haha.

Perhaps I am being thick. My MOT is due 20th June. Assuming the current lockdown is lifted by then, do I stick to that date or is it now 20th December irrespective

Your car, motorcycle, light van or other light vehicle’s MOT expiry date will be automatically extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after Monday 30 March 2020.
Your MOT due date will become 20 December. (AIUI).

6 months of the due date however you can do it at the same time as usual.

Have a car where 2nd MOT is due 3 May. Guess this now becomes 3 November.

But - what's the crack with road tax and insurance?
What effect does a deferred MOT have on these?

Edited to add : Apologies if this has already been answered on a previous page.
