Couple of A400 came over here about 20 mins ago. One at 20,000 feet heading up to Scotland and one was heading South having come over from Belfast. The latter was at 8,000 feet as it flew across my back garden and what a strange noise it made! Propeller like, but nothing like a Hercules for example and with a strange jet engine like noise mixed in.

Quite distinctive when you hear them isn't it, I put the difference down to the new propellers.

Very much so, had a few of them over here but mostly at 20,000 feet so difficult to hear other than the drone of an overflying plane, so that's the first one I've really heard tonight and it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. Also, super bright strobes too so seeing them was dead easy in the night sky!

I thought the same, instantly knew it wasn’t something run of the mill.

There is a lot going on, there is a America tanker working near the Yorkshire coast so may be American fighters up as well.

That’s the D323 complex usually you will have an E3 up doing the fighter control then the jets doing the aerial dog fighting and FRA/Cobham providing aircraft to fight with. I think there’s E3 crew on here that can better explain.

We’re U/S today we were supposed to be up. Reason for so much activity. Try googling Ex Point Blank.
