It's frustrating that people don't get this. People seem to think that by throwing a bit of money about you can solve the problem and pat yourself on the back as the hero who saved the starving kids.

The problem with this is that they've not addressed the root problem of the useless st bag parents who've failed and will continue to fail to provide for their kids regardless of what they've already been given in order to do so.
Equally a lot of people also seem to think that you can throw around a few trite phrases like "leveling up" whilst leaving it to a footballer to deal with an imminent problem.

When a footballer and thousands of small struggling businesses and even McDonalds come out of something looking better than the Government for making sure kids get fed something has gone wrong.

Ask yourself what Johnson was signing off with last night.

You've completely missed the point.

How much do the government need to give people before you accept that never mind how much they do give, certain people wont spend it on what they're meant to. These people who aren't budgeting to put food in their own kids mouths, who arent prioritising their own kids welfare, will continue not to do so regardless of whats given to them.

I don't think I have.

You've had a bunch of private businesses step in where Government has failed to act.

Of course you're quite right some people won't spend it on what they're meant to.

But you don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good and I don't see the Government with much of a plan to deal with a looming issue.

I don't think many people on these threads have experienced the kind of lives and tough choices faced by families at the bottom of the wealth ladder. There lingers an undertone that these people have chosen a 'lifestyle' and are entirely responsible for their lot. Some imply or state we shouldn't 'let parents off' the duty to provide for their kids by giving them handouts.

It's a very sad and uncaring outlook.

I applaud young Rashford and all the businesses who have stepped in where our government would not.
Exactly.

I'm not advocating more cash handouts as it appears that just doesn't work so an alternative approach is needed, but letting kids who, through no fault of their own, go hungry is a terrible approach.

And I doff my cap to Marcus Rashford who is proving himself to be an exceptional young man.

Hence why giving free school meals to ALL children is a good approach. You can guarantee that most of that spend goes directly to the children. A reduction in child benefit redirected to school meals and almost everyone but feckless parents would be happy. The kids are getting fed a decent lunch, parents don't have to make packed lunches, the cost of school kitchens is spread across many more dinners AND the government can be seen as caring and compassionate.

Back in the 70-80's my mum brought us up as a single parent. She worked as a dinner lady for 40years , she cleaned the local surgery in the evenings and washed dishes in the local hotel at weekends. She also babysat for a couple of the other other family's in our village. During the summer holidays, she picked fruit with the other mums on the local farm. For about 2 years only, myself and my sister had dinner tokens, but we received nothing extra during the holidays. My mum also worked throughout my sisters 6 years at Uni and sent her every penny she could so she could get her degree in medicine. My sister worked most evenings in the local pizza place when at Uni. My mum didnt smoke or drink, worked all her life and now receives a basic government pension of around 170 quid a week.

As a father now, when I occasionally walk my son to school, and I see the number of unemployed mums, mums I know the history of, with their tattoos. cigarette on the go, drug users, 60 inch TV at home, taking the piss, claiming that bit extra for their 'ADHD' brat of a kid, it does my head in when the school make me pay to take my son swimming or field trips, but their kids get it for free.

If you cant afford it, you cant go. Simple. All they are teaching most of these kids is the the back door to a free ride and a first class honours degree in being bone idle. I know there are cases that are different and parents are at their wits end, but there are also piss takers, lots of them, and doubt these parents without question, are raking in a damn site more than my mums poxy pension. Dont get me started on other parts of our community who have contributed nothing but receive double or treble what she does.
Very noble of you Marcus, but stick to what you know best. Being a just above average prem league striker.

So they are putting in an extra £9bn to existing claimants (excluding spending on new claimants) but you still have muppets saying they are "leaving children to starve" as they are not spending a few hundred million more on a voucher scheme. Not a scheme that actually feeds hungry children, but a voucher scheme.

That is the thing I don’t get about this whole issue, the government are supposedly advised by Cummings the genius but this paints them as uncaring and pretty loathsome. It isn’t a huge amount of money compared to the sums thrown about recently so why generate the negative headlines and fight it?

Absolutely right! That’s why I don’t support this extra money to ‘feed the kids’. It is correct children are not to blame but where do we stop. We have a welfare system where this is being accounted already. Paying for free meals would reduce even more the parental responsibility, why stop at school meals?

Your mother was spot on, I bet she never complained, she did what she needed to do! Today it’s always someone else’s fault, it’s the government not providing, etc etc. we created a big monster which was a generous wide spread welfare system and that’s all very well but some people need to step up... welfare shouldn’t be a career choice but it is for many.

Sadly there will be cases where a help would be appreciated but I think a big proportion of such a scheme would be abused and once you give it you can’t take it away. If the cash from welfare is badly spent then perhaps reduce cash payments and replace part of them with food vouchers, etc to ensure part of the welfare is spent on basics?

Marcus Rashford feels for the kids that’s great abs is using his platform for awareness but his demands show a lack of understanding of the big picture. Throwing more money will not solve anything, the root of the problem is deeper than that. Throwing money like that will disenfranchise the parents even more from their responsibilities.

Yes children shouldn’t starve but the proposed solution is not good in the long term. Parents need to step up I’m afraid. If they can’t then their payouts need to be reduced if the government takes over some parenting roles such as feed their children..

I question whether its all being a bit dramatic, "millions of starving kids"? Really?

I'm not saying there isn't a problem but I just wonder if it's all a bit of an over reaction and we are seeing a st ton of virtue signalling now, I've seen local takeaways offering free meals to kids with slogans such as "we won't let our kids starve".

We just have to be careful using powerful words as starving, when in reality its more localised rather than widespread poverty.

Facebook is awash with "gov spends elevnty billion XYZ, but refuse to feed our children" how dare they!!! " sort of crap.

Where is the data, rather than posts from sheila on Facebook with story of Jimmy with piano key ribs.

I do applaud Rashford though, he is a good role model for the youngsters, and it was no bad thing to keep canteens open during the summer but his campaign now seems to have been hijacked by the wider community as a tool to beat the government with.

In amongst all the ranting you missed the fact that this scheme does not guarantee hungry children receive any extra food. It provides vouchers to neglectful parents who are already misusing the money they are given to feed their children.

Perhaps the money could be spent on social workers. Any child who turns up at school hungry could trigger a social worker visit to their home, to go through their parents incomings and outgoings, to highlight where they are going wrong compared to the equally poor parents who are not failing to feed their children.
Agreed ^^ but unfortunately you can see the howls of indignation from the "Left"

When benefits in this country clearly provide enough for the majority ... we need to understand and assist (change behaviour for feckless of those who are not acting responsibly for their children./ Provide further assistance for those genuinely caught in a poverty trap)

Digga said:
There's an argument for providing free meals for all, full stop. Do breakfasts and it gets the kids there on time too.
It may be a socialist idea but I'd be up for a taxpayer funded school provision of a breakfast service before & lunch service during school, ...... That's a different debate than Marcus R's voucher scheme though
.

I can assure you that I have empathy and have lived the experience of Seanrof .... There with all the benefits & especially food banks (there was a study maybe by fullfact.org that highlighted due to food banks food poverty (of no food in the fridge/cupboards had reduced 98%))

To summerise ... All the negative to Rashfords bill posters on this forum agree children should have full bellies, They disagree that it's the governments job to feed the children, They highlight that those low waged / unemployed are already provided with the means by the government to do so

He's a massively above average human being though, and a brilliant role model.

I'm firmly in the ABU camp, but I'd love to see Rashford win a big trophy.

By the way WTF are you doing to help, you sanctimonious knob?

unbelievable - only here could some idiots preach that poverty is a lifestyle choice.

6th biggest economy in the world and we've got foodbanks and starving kids and for the majority it's not because the parents are at fault, we've created a society were if you're born at the bottom it's almost impossible to find a ladder, never mind climb up it.

Shame on anyone who thinks it's acceptable to let another human starve.

No one thinks its acceptable, but merely questioning how, given that there is already benefits paid out for the provision of feeding your child, are they suddenly all starving?

A lot of sensational claims being made at the moment, with zero stats to back it up.

If she'd worked a bit harder she'd have a better pension... (I'm new to this stting on people less fortunate, have I done it right?)

Seriously, how can you write about how hard your mother was working yet she still needed to rely on school meal vouchers and feel bile and hatred towards other parents currently in the same situation?

I'd be targeting my anger towards a system where your mother worked as hard as she did and still needed to rely on school meal vouchers.

If your response is to say you only had free school meals for 2 years I'll remind you we are in the middle of a pandemic. Now is a good time to show empathy towards people who are struggling.

When you have people who clearly have zero actual clue about a subject, arguing erroneous points, then yes, there are going to be many stupid comments made.
