There are people who are adamant they are beat at factory pressures. The improvement at lower pressure is so dramatic I wonder if they have ever driven a 996.

I agree. Factory recommended pressures for the 996 on 18s is 36F 44R. Whichever tyre you have, they feel awful on those pressures. They’re just too hard, and the car follows every imperfection in the road. In a 996 C2 coupe, I run 32F and 36R, and I find that works really well. I also prefer to have the 265/35 rear tyre, the 285/30 seems overtyred for 300bhp.

Good question

Difficult to put my finger on

There was a problem with the brake pedal which I spoke up about

Then the suspension didn't feel good or sorted or together I'm some way

So I'd suspect worn dampers maybe because it had mostly all new arms, drop links and tie rods I think they're called - join the rack to the hub

Not sure about top mounts
The issue with 996 suspension is there are so many components connecting the hub to the body…whenever I’ve stripped a corner, I’ve discovered it’s hopeless trying to work out if it’s the coffin arm, or maybe the control arm or top mount that’s worn and needs changing, so you need up changing the whole lot, on all 4 corners, and then it feels brilliant again..!

Sometimes it’s obvious and the bush will have split and clearly needs changing, but it’s not always so clear.

A bit more work on mine over the last few weeks.

3 weeks ago it blew a cooling pipe when my wife was driving out of central London at 6pm and dropped all its coolant. 1.5hrs later the AA arrived, reattached the pipe and tried to refill the system… and failed. 2 hours later the flatbed arrived to recover the car. Needless to say I wasn’t the most popular person rolleyes

Fortunately, our trusted mechanic knows what he’s doing and despite some early worries about gunge and condensation in the filler tube, a few hours of filling and bleeding later it was all good again.

We then decided to do some other work whilst my wife was over here in Spain for 10 days… service (oil, filters, plugs, main belt), AC compressor (it was very whiny) and gearbox service… car blew a power steering pipe while there, so that got done as well (more will need doing in due course, so may look at doing the rack as a precaution)… plus new clips for most of the cooling system.

AC condensers are knackered and restricting air flow to the rads (it’s running a bit hotter than usual) but somehow not leaking, so that’s another small job when wifey is back here in a couple of weeks.

Mechanic says it’s running super sweetly… strong oil pressure and no ticking when hot or timing chain rattles when started from cold.

215k miles biggrin

The value of having someone you trust to look after your car is priceless.

I used to get random ticking on my older 996. Never quite pinned it down to hot or cold. But very common on cold start ups so assumed oil not circulated around. Then noticed it very occasionally when hot like coming off the motorway and thought my diagnosis was off. What would ticking when hot mean?

I don’t know what causes the ticking. Mine was occasional and hardly noticeable. Timing chain rattle at start up more noticeable if it hadn’t been used for a couple of days in the winter.

Another observation… still uses virtually no oil…1l in 15k miles.

The noises Porsche engines make are terrifiying. I think Mr Mezger was laughing his head off when he designed the idle for the turbo/GT cars!

A 996 turbo at idle sounds like it’s broken doesn’t it..? Not one for those with anxiety..!

986, 987 and 996 I find often have a ticking noise on startup, plus after 5 mins of idling if they’ve been left parked up for a few weeks. This noise soon disappears after a decent drive, leading me to suspect it’s just an oil circulation issue.

The same ticking noise when hot would lead me to suggest it’s the same lack of oil circulation. Maybe try an oil change and see if the problem persists. I use Mobil 1 5W-40

The one in that vid sounds ok compared to some. Cold start and that’s when they sound their best due to thick oil. Well, except for the cam chain rattle for a split second if it has been stood a while.
It’s once they warm up and the oil thins a bit you get all the noise. Bloody awful. hehe

Listen to this one in between the owner revving the knackers off it. About 55 seconds in.

Haha that’s it! What a contrast with the sonerous sound it makes as the revs pass about 3500k!

Try at LWFW - on the throttle from around 2000 to 3000 revs sounds like the engine is pinking badly, maybe it is!

Own a 996 long enough and you just dial out noises (and smells!) that would cause owners of other marques to think their car was lunching itself.

I did ask 9e about the noise in mine and they gave the engine a clean bill of health! Still makes me nervous sometimes.
