That might be a bit misleading. The JC DS SD has been around for a while. To order one new now, you're looking at the 136660 which (I think, could be wrong) is around the £12k mark. (subject to availability )

My thoughts on the JC edition are that it's one of the best-looking watches Rolex make. It's no shrinking violet, but if you like a watch with some heft/presence/feeling of (overly) engineered quality then it's a great choice.

Re price, I bought a pretty much mint example (126660, late 2020 watch) recently for roughly 12.5k after some shopping around.

It's a nice watch, but in no way rare and there are loads of them out there for sale.

Absolutely; but that extra 25% changes it for a lot of people.

There have been plenty selling on WC for under £10k.

I'm not talking the market up or down, I just posted what the most recent used 2020 watch sold for as per the posters question.

They are about £12.5 list, slightly more than the standard black dial version. I am on the list with WoS and was offered a black dial one pretty quickly but declined. Awaiting news from both my local dealer and WoS about a JC version. I am something of a giant so need a big watch.

Anyone see Antiques Roadshow last night? A Rolex "Double Red" Sea Dweller 1665 from 1972, a gift from his brother. Estimated at a staggering £35,000.

Yes, I saw that last night. To me, it didn't look correct. For a 51 year old watch, it looked about 2 years old. Obviously been back to Rolex and had many parts replaced, and totally ruined it.
As many advise on here, it should have been sympatheticly serviced by an independent to retain its patina. At least he had the original bracelet.

1. Even if the watch were solid gold, the value would be less than the RRP of the watch when it's a Rolex, so the metal value doesn't really come into it, unless the brand become worthless or there is an apocalypse
2. Gold is much less durable than steel, so a lot of people don't like it
3. Gold is quite flashy so a lot of people don't like it
4. Gold is heavy so a lot of people don't like it

Never seen a Rolex Submariner described as being tacky before.

Not sure the chap's responses can be defined as a 'breakdown'; rather, they appear to acknowledge the emotional aspect of making a large/expensive purchase (which is exactly what 'brand names' seek to invoke and rely on when overcharging for items that obviously cost far less to make than they are sold for) and the frustrations felt when receiving treatment that is arguably pointless gatekeeping.

It seems inappropriate to mock his feelings 'because internet'.
