Budget - car tax rates next year

And this is the rub.
Many people will now keep hold of their ice cars for longer rather than look at new.
I can certainly see this being the case. As much as the EV fans will argue their superiority and why everyone should have them but there's still a large number of people who don't. I can well imagine those people holding onto their ICE vehicles longer than they would have in previous times. If ICE vehicles are going to be stung badly on the VED for the first X number of years, people will no bother. There will be some how transition to EVs by default but there is still a large portion of people who don't buy into them at all, many who are hugely cynical. Many people will now keep hold of their ice cars for longer rather than look at new.

You seem to have gone 'full wibble' there.
I was hoping the poster would let me know what he saw as the benefit and why it is so important to him that other people buy EVs. People deciding that other people's opinion is something insane, then ranting about that assumed opinion is why these discussions always go the same way.
Pretty critical that the overwhelming majority of the market becomes EV yep. Not a choice for the plebs to makeI was hoping the poster would let me know what he saw as the benefit and why it is so important to him that other people buy EVs. As an avid petrolhead it pains me to say this, but....
We really do need to get people out of highly polluting ICE cars.
I'm no EV fan but they are coming to take over. At least the cash grab just applies to new cars and not less affluent folk who can't afford new and depend on their older car.
I can't see the issue tbh

Less noise
Slow reduction in usage of fossil fuels
That kind of stuff

I'm confused how evs are part of this new world order where some shadowy organization want's to control me, presumably already control bp, shell and the entire fuel distribution network throughout the world, and all the card payment processors I might use to pay for fuel.
They want to control me by moving me out of a car which I have absolutely no chance of producing fuel for at home, into a car I can power completely off grid with solar panels on my roof.

I'm more confused as to why you are ranting about that stance, as nobody has claimed anything of the sort (at least within this thread, I haven't checked the whole internet). They want to control me by moving me out of a car which I have absolutely no chance of producing fuel for at home, into a car I can power completely off grid with solar panels on my roof.

I read that a new Defender would cost £5.5k to tax in its first year, under Thieves' new budget. Problem is, she'll have another budget in 12 months' time, and one another 12 months after that... this may only be the tip of the iceberg.
I shall continue watching from the sidelines, with a fleet of older ICE around me, and let it pan out. I'm in no rush for an EV (nor a new Defender for that matter).
Judging by Defender engine problems,no bad thing then I shall continue watching from the sidelines, with a fleet of older ICE around me, and let it pan out. I'm in no rush for an EV (nor a new Defender for that matter).

You've been 'controlled' over car choices all your life. They want to control me by moving me out of a car which I have absolutely no chance of producing fuel for at home, into a car I can power completely off grid with solar panels on my roof.
EV and hydrogen tech has been around for yonks - it's just nobody wanted/allowed them to be developed because there is a lot of money and corruption giving you the 'choice' between between Petrol or Diesel.

Without wishing to go full tin foil hat and purely for the sake of responding to this. Modern cars and certainly EVs are connected constantly. They want to control me by moving me out of a car which I have absolutely no chance of producing fuel for at home, into a car I can power completely off grid with solar panels on my roof.
There has been cases where Tesla have increased range on models remotely to help during a natural disaster. I assume the opposite can be done and range could be remotely reduced too.
If, and purely pie in the sky but say if we're told we're not allowed (another lock down for example) to go somewhere then the car can be stopped. Whether it's geofencing or using the software built in to reduce range.
I'm not saying fuel supplies can't be restricted either. All personal transport is reliant on things beyond our control. You'd like to think the powers that be aren't as controlling as that and we'll be retaining the freedom we have now.
But to think a modern EV is "off grid" I would say is a tad naive.

A new world order, where all our daily choices are "socially engineered" because our government is simply following orders by the World Economic Forum. That seems to be the prevailing conspiracy theory being peddled these days, right?
Or we could look forward to walking down the road in a city at rush hour and not having to breathe in crappy emissions from petrol and diesel cars.

Every car approved in the EU since 2018 has had to have the ecall system built in, so nothing is off grid and most high end manufactures have had far more of this stuff for far longer. It makes absolutely no difference if they are EV or ICE, there is no connection between a car's power source and it's need to be connected. There has been cases where Tesla have increased range on models remotely to help during a natural disaster. My point was that if you want to control people oil dependence has been a great tool, EVs are a step back in that regard.

You and raspy are claiming that other people on here are stating that as fact and then you are ranting about this. You have invented the situation so that you have something to rant about. It's very easy to pretend that other people hold some crazy opinion to avoid listening to what they're actually saying but it really is incredibly divisive.

Very true. No car since that point has been off grid. I mean ultimately if some sinister conspiracy were to happen (again not saying it would) then a modern ICE or EV could be remotely stopped from going anywhere. They're all controlled by software along the lines. My point was that if you want to control people oil dependence has been a great tool, EVs are a step back in that regard.
I suppose if you look at the control idea, you take a 2010 diesel car, can't be turned off remotely (that I'm aware of) and can do 600+ miles to one tank. Keep yourself a few jerry cans and you could be driving that around for a while. EV could certainly have the range reduced, could it be prevented from charging even? Who knows.
All very post apocalyptic certainly.

If I read the thread correctly it only applies to new cars built after April 2025 ?
so a 2024 SVR with a £600 tax band will £600 after April ?
It's new cars registered after April 2025 but a 2024 SVR will be £600 plus the normal annual inflation increase from April 2025.so a 2024 SVR with a £600 tax band will £600 after April ?
