Can’t retain plate online

Hello! Appreciate it’s been some time since anyone posted on here but I have agreed to trade in my car and get a new one, I have a private Reg plate on the car and tried to do this on Sunday but DVLA says they could not complete the process online - the plate was put on the car in December 2021 instantly online with no issues. I posted the manual V317 form and V5C off on Monday 5th June 2023, and they received it signed for on Tuesday 6th June 2023 at 10am. Has anyone done this recently and how long did it take to get the form back? Did they need to do an inspection and how did this go? Never had this before so quite anxious. Hopefully I hear from them soon as I’ve paid a holding deposit on my new car so hope the dealer can wait! Thanks for any responses.
Many thanks! They’re being a bit slower than that for me. They signed for it on 24th Feb and it still hasn’t been actioned. I am retaining one plate though and assigning another so maybe that takes a bit longer?
Perhaps I would’ve been better off just doing the retention by post then instantly assigning the new one online.

I'm having this issue at the moment...
I was hoping to sell my car in the next couple of weeks, but the unique way in which the UK's bureaucracy works means that plan can't happen (I've been quoted 4 weeks' turnaround time).
The reason I was given is that the car has previously been untaxed and in the motor trade for longer than 6 months...
What a load of utter tosh.

Had exactly this last August, never had a problem doing it on line before. Rang them and they gave me the same reasons as you were given, no flexibility, they did not give a s

It took exactly 7 days from my posting the forms to receiving a new V5 and retention certificate in the post.I was hoping to sell my car in the next couple of weeks, but the unique way in which the UK's bureaucracy works means that plan can't happen (I've been quoted 4 weeks' turnaround time).

I still maintain it was entirely unnecessary.
Bumping this thread as unfortunately the DVLA still have this process in place.
Trying to remove the private plate off of my dads old car to transfer it to his new one, but because his old car was registered with the main dealer, used as a demonstrator and was over 6 months old when he bought it, DVLA computer says no.
So we are now having to wait until he receives the V5 for the new car and post both together along with a cheque in order to do the transfer.
Had to double check it was 2026 when I heard of what was required!
