2024 BMW X5 40d

This is a bit of a continuation of my 2022 GLE400d thread...

We swapped the GLE for a 4 month old X5 40d with 2200 miles on the clock when we got it. At first neither of us actually liked the X5 to look at or sit in to be honest, and we much preferred the Merc at first.

But now we have really warned to the X5 though, and it is definitely the better car to drive out of the 2 of them for us now. The way it rides is night and day better than the Merc in fairness.

The X5 is a nice spec with air suspension/7 seats/massage/cooled seats/HUD/HK/soft close doors/rear heated seats etc. Plus I really like the augmented nav in it as well.

The car is playing up a bit in exactly the same way as the Merc regarding the cameras though. The front collision warning light came on after a week of having it, so it went back to the dealer to be fixed, but the warning light came back on again after 4 days though. So it is booked in again for that now.

Some pics from collecting it etc, and I'll keep the thread updated with my thoughts going forward on it as well.

I was a bit gutted that this was on Continentals to be honest, because I've never been a fan of them really. However I am obviously really hoping that this fares better in the tyre wear department in comparison to the Merc though as you say!

I have priced the tyres up already on this, and they are far cheaper than the Merc's because they aren't quite as wide front or rear(plus a more conventional width really so more available on other cars). So that is a nice bonus I think, plus surely this won't get through 7 sets of rears either(hopefully!).

I can't believe that it is 15 years now since I had my first X5(the 2004 E53 X5 4.8iS back in 2010). I absolutely loved the 4.8iS for sure, but the 12mpg that it offered me on my commute at the time...not so much though!

I remember thinking how nice the 4.8iS rode on it's air suspension back then too, and 20" wheels seemed quite big back then(versus the 22" on this) I thought. However both cars do have a lovely ride though for sure I reckon, and BMW have judged the ride and body control in this very well for me(especially in comparison to the GLE, because that used to bob up and down and from side to side a lot on it's air suspension for example). The X5 just doesn't do that, and it rides the road/pot holes incredibly well I think.

The 40d is also better on fuel than the 400d was as well, but I think the mild hybrid bit helps with that though in the 40d in fairness.

That's got quite a spec Lee!

As it has a tyre repair kit presumably it doesn't have run-flats, which may help explain why the ride is decent even on 22s. Just keep those wheels away from kerbs.

They are normal tyres on the 22" wheels as you say. There isn't a great deal of rim protection on the Continentals in comparison to the Michelins and Pirellis that were on the Merc to be fair either.

It does at least have all the cameras on it though, so they help you judge things quite well, and both myself and my missus always try to stay off the kerbs anyway generally(touchwood!).

Glad you’re warming to it, I’m looking at buying one soon, so your ownership experience is valuable. A few questions if I may:

Can you turn off all the annoying lane control and speed limit functions as a one off, or do you need to repeat every trip?
How are you getting on with the infotainment being fully touch screen? I hate the idea but accept it’s the way of the world now!
Does it have comfort opening on the rear doors?
See you have a towbar, do you lose the kick to open boot function with this?
What MPG are you getting and what did the Merc get?

Thanks and we've definitely warmed to it now for sure.

The lane control is always on everytime you start the car, but it is easy to turn off though, but it very subtle and you barely notice it, whereas it was harsh in comparison in the Merc.

Weirdly it doesn't have the annoying speed limit bong on it, but every other 24 plate Beemer/Merc that I've driven has though, and I've had to turn it off in those.

The full touchscreen functions niggled me at first, but it is amazing how quickly you get used to it though.

No comfort opening on the rear doors just the front, but you can programme it to lock and unlock as you approach and leave the car though if you wish.

You can still kick the boot open even with the towbar.

I'm currently getting 42mpg from my journeys in it, and my missus is currently getting 45mpg on her journeys. The Merc did about 39mpg overall in comparison for example.

I hope that gives you a rough idea of it, and I can definitely recommend them. I'm happy to share my experience with anything else too.

Very nice! I’ve just got my 45e recently, I completely understand the SUV fascination now. I’m on 21s and even with the extra PHEV weight it rides well on the air. Enjoy

I've been fortunate to have driven both the X5 45e and 50e now, and I do love the idea of them, especially the lovely B58 engine for sure.

I really like that you can do all your local runs in them on battery only, and that definitely appeals to me, plus you still have the lovely B58 engine to fall back on too.

Top tip, any BMW's that do have the 2024 speed bong, a long press on button 2, set, and its disabled for that trip, saves any messing in the screen.

It does legally need to reset back to on the next time the car is started, and you need to rinse and repeat.

As has been mentioned, all the other lane tech etc isn't intrusive and doesnt need switched off.

The kidney grill is relatively subtle, and it lights up from the top and downwards behind the slats. It does look quite cool I personally think at night in fairness.

I had a 2024 320i as a loan car recently, and I had to google how to turn the speed bong off in that. It mentioned holding the SET button as you've shown there cheers.

I keep saying to my missus that I can't believe that the X5 doesn't have the speed bong on it really(not that I'm complaining though!), with it being a legal requirement on new cars now I thought.

It must be a 23 build, so just before it became mandatory, I’d take that as a blessing, because it is annoying!

I'm happy to chip in to help too, if anyone has any 40d questions.

Wife has a 22 pre facelift 40d we have had since nearly new. It should have been replaced at the 3 year stage, but its only on 15k now, been excellent, drives great, super reliable, and quite hard to replace due to how good value they are in relation to the competition. A facelift X5, a Range Rover Sport, or a Porsche Cayenne with the right spec are all £50k+ away, which doesn’t seem value.

We are short journeys, so around 32mpg.

Biggest gripe, which applies to all BMW’s, is the complexity of the specification on them. A lot are pretty basic, and they need tens of thousands spent on packs to bring them up. I wish they would just do a specific model with everything so that it keeps it super simple and it would benefit the residual as it would be clear what it has.

At a glance compared to yours mine has Bowers and Wilkins hifi, and individual paint and interior, but it doesn’t have the self-drive/steer tech, which I have experienced and is great and with hindsight would have wanted.

Tanzanite is lovely, and your contrasting interior is ace too.

Agree with what you say regarding the options as well, and I liked Merc in that regard, because they just throw everything at the premium plus model to make it nice and easy in comparison to beemer for example.

The spec on yours is mental for sure!
