A mate of mine got caught doing roughly the same (well 105-110) on the motorway once. He got a two week ban and a £500 fine (approximately).

His boss lent him a car for the weekend, so he went out and drove it at over 100mph.

I'd be more worried about my job if i was him.
This. A short ban will be the least of his worries if he is sacked.

The majority get banned for 30mph+ over the posted limit. Just a guideline so he may get off if he has a good lawyer. No lawyer = curtains IMHO.

TX.

Edit - oops, lawyer involved redface

Assuming a 70mph limit, he may well end up with 6 points and no ban - will depend upon the bench on the day, any aggravating factors, how well his mitigation is presented, etc etc..

I know a number of people that got away with a fine and number of points for that kind of speed without a solicitor.

Irrelevant. If I had loaned my car out to someone who was subordinate to me, I'd expect them to treat it with respect. If they go around being reckless, then I'd have more than a few words.

I was caught doing 102.5 mph on a dualled section of the A11 heading toward Norwich in 2000.

I went to Swaffham Magistrates without a solicitor, grovelled, apologised, said I needed the car for work but that was no excuse, etc.

Result was 6 points, £540 fine plus £35 costs.

No idea if the guidelines have changed since then, but that's what happened to me.

Really? I used to lend mine out quite frequently, my only conditions of use were - bring it back washed and don't rag it from cold.

I couldn't give a monkeys what they did with it (kept a note of who had it and when) if they phoned me to say they launched it off a cliff or into the sea I wouldn't care - it's a company car, completely disposable, that's the point of them. If they'd done something reckless or stupid with it in works time, a bit different but if they'd borrowed it for a weekend, on their head be it.

Depends on the magistrate. Having a lawyer could work for or against him.

If it were me I'd be going cap in hand, without a lawyer, and say "I am very sorry sir" and how I need my license for whatever reason.

Get the solicitor to grovel as much as possible about keeping his job, mortgage payments and other associated stuff that your SiL knows he has put at risk due to the case he is facing and cross your fingers.

Essex Plod are not known for being lenient (sp?) in cases like this but he might get in on a good day and get away with a short ban and a large fine.

Best of luck.
