Hey guys, little help please! I've let my weekend car lapse on mot and tax for a couple months as haven't driven it / been to parents where it lives. I haven't sorned it though.

Anyway, I'm going to drop it to the dealer this evening and leave it there for service + mot. What's the deal with driving it there with no tax? Am I allowed to as I am with no mot?

Thanks in advance.

If you haven't sorned it the DVLA will automatically just assume it's on the road without tax and pop a fine in the post to you AFAIK.

You'll be getting a fine through the post shortly, I reckon.

Doesn't matter if you use it, you have to insure it or SORN it.

OK to drive to a pre-booked MOT.

Probably charge you for the "lost" months when you buy VED, fine you, rape you, take your house, crush the car etc etc.

sorn fine on the way !
(followed by a thread on how unfair the fine was/is possably ?? )
The only time you can drive a car with no tax leagaly is on the way to and from a Pre booked MOT, on the way or from a place of pre booked work for the MOT or to a scrap yard to dispose of the vehical.

How long does the car have to be out of tax on average before a fine arrives in the post? At the moment my car is left at home and im at university but the tax is out by about a week or so. I was just going to tax it when i got home, stick the disk in the window and carry on like normal. It will probably be about 12-14 days overdue, kept on a drive and not driven by anyone else.

Edit to say its got shed loads of MOT left due to being a peasant student and only taxing it 6 months at a time.

OP - sounds like you have a fine incoming although personally I would go along the lines of phoning the DVLA and saying 'why havent I had a letter ackowledging the SORN paperwork I sent you two months ago?' worth a try, sod giving the DVLA money if you can possibly avoid it! To answer your question, you are ok to drive to a pre-booked MOT without tax/MOT.

Megatron - In your case you'll be ok, as presumably the tax will be consecutive, ie you aren't trying to skip a month?

Nah im not skipping a month, my cars just at home so i was going to tax it when i got back because all the information i need is at home rather than university.
Thanks for that.

Hey everyone, thanks for your comments. The insurance was renewed this month so i'm ok. They will keep it a week doing the MOT and a service so i'll just tax it when i get it back!

Thanks again.

I'd say 12-14 days is getting towards the limit of what I'd risk. You only need the car's reg and either the V5 or SORN declaration document number to do it over the net, couldn't you get your parents to dig out one or the other and read it out to you?

I'm not so sure this is true. A friend has been driving without tax since October '09 and he's not even received a letter, so I doubt they'll be chasing up people who've missed 1 month worth of tax.

Your friend has the correct registered keepers address on the log book?

Yep. He's an idiot and he's pushing his luck every time he drives it, but so far he's been getting away with it.

Earlier this year my car was in for MOT and some bits and bobs. It went in just before the end of Feb. Tax expired at the end of Feb. Fully insured for 12 months so no issues there.

Anyway the bits and bobs took longer than expected due to waiting for parts etc. and I eventually went to pick it up on 16th March. It was at this point 16 days out of tax and not SORN. Armed with my insurance cert. fresh MOT and other documents I wandered down to the Post Office close to garage, bought disc, put in window and drove off home.

When I got home the postie had been and there was a letter from DVLA warning me that my vehicle was over two weeks late being taxed, should be SORN, ignore if recently taxed etc.

Apparently you're OK if you tax it within the month. You should get a reminder a couple of weeks into the month. After a clear month the penalty is supposed to be automatic, and there are plenty of posts on the internet from people who've received a penalty pretty quickly, so no idea why some people appear to get away with it.

DVLA send the unpaid penalties off to debt collectors, so if these people have been buring their heads in the sand then they're going to get a knock on the door. If their car is on the road, then it'll get clamped.

Recently had a similar experience, tallied with insurance company issuing insurance with the wrong registration details.
Basically meant it went just over 3 weeks without tax - never heard a dicky bird.
I think you'll be fine OP.

OK great. I looked at the car when I dropped it off yesterday - tax ran out end of March! That shows you how long i haven't been driving it...

Still started first time though and I hadn't disconnected the battery so i'm chuffed.

Have a mountain of post to open so i'm sure i'll come across a fine eventually!

Thanks again to all participants; very helpful.

You are very optomistic about how the authorities will view your not taxing your car. They actually work on a seven day week (not a five day week) so if you posted this on the 24th of the month and your tax ran out at the end of April then it is 24 days overdue, not 12-14.
