My neighbour just informed me that as of this Monday every car whether on the road or not has to be insured or sorned.

Is this true as I have an old smoker that's taxed and Mot'd but not insured as it's not used due to a new car.

Can anyone shed any light

If it is not SORN'd then it must be insured.

My car is at a main dealer, sale or return. The insurance expires in the next few weeks, but the car is fully covered by the dealer's insurance. Do i need to renew the cover myself ?

Interesting.....mentions being clamped, thought that was illegal in Scotland, or is the DVLA exempt. Apart from that whats new, SORN has been around for some time now.

Either SORN it, re-insure it, or register the car in the dealers name.

Either reinsure it or just make sure the dealer registers it to their trader policy

I dont know either if a dealer is allowed to SORN all their cars and use trade plates to take you out for a test drive paperbag

DVLA appears to be a law unto itself in many areas of its operation. But, IIRC, the law in Scotland only applies to private clamping. I'm sure DVLA will be (or feel it is) exempt.

An interesting issue, particularly in my case.

I have a car which I have owned since before SORN came into being, and which has never been on the road during that time. It has no MOT and is not insured. Occassional checks via the DVLA vehicle enquiry function shows that it is neither taxed nor SORNd. I have enquired several times with the DVLA as to how to declare SORN on it, only to be told that, because it was not taxed when SORN came into being, I could not now declare it...

It might be a good idea to write to the DVLA to ask for a current statement of the requirement.

Surprisingly someone thought about this when the law was introduced, if it was already off road on 31 Jan 1998 it is exempt.

Any suggestion that the DVLA have a clue what they're doing will be swiftly shot down I'm afraid wink

Just did what I, admittedly, should have done first and checked what direct.gov says today... smile

Starting at the end of Jun 2011, the DVLA will start to send out the notices re uninsured, unSORNed vehicles.

And, yes, the exemption for those vehicles not taxed before the introduction of SORN in 1998 is clearly stated...

They've started showing adverts on late night TV about this now, caught one the other day at about 12:30am. Really not sure how many people are going to actually see these public information films given the fact they're only ever on whilst 90% of the population is sleeping.
