Do 'they' really think that being ticketed will slow people down in the long term???
As a habitual 'speeder' (ie 80-90 on dual cabbageways) I'll be buggered if some arse that I don't respect is going to slow me down when it's safe and appropriate by sending me a fine two weeks hence.

They could get you before you could see them with the normal lasers, soon they plan to detect you are speeding and send you the tax demand before you get home.

Was reported that they were looking into this last August-ish. "To do away with road tax disc"
Little posts on roadside to monitor each journey, distance, time taken, speed. 
Just think of the rumpus which would erupt in every household in the country when the itemised bill of each journey arrives on the doormat! "Why were you on that road? You were seeing that TART!" and such like. Forget the sicky and trip to shops - boss will know where you were and what you were up to...Next to come technology for... Every little detail of your life - recorded and perhaps used against you in everyday stuff - such as getting a job, opening bank account, even making your choices for you .....
Not to mention the potential risk to your licence, wallets and livelihood as speed tolerances fall to say - .0001 over the posted limit.
Stasis!! We are creating a most unpleasant world - devoid of the freedoms our parents and grandparents fought for! Hitler and Stalin (and Honecker) must be laughing their heads off down there - along with the demon stokers! Lived in GDR and UdSSR under communist rule - and it was most unpleasant - even for just a few months! Would not want that way of life imposed on me ever again! And the trouble is - with this kind of technology - it is becoming possibly much more intrusive and thus far worse!
As for this long distance laser jobby - France, according to press article in "France Soir" last year, has been testing it for some time as well, (think I did see photo of it on-line somewhere too - but cannot remember where!), and I understand Switzerland has been using it too!

The dual carriageway running from ringwood into Bournemouth is quiet straight!

intentions made clear. maybe someone should look to the long term and think for a second: we finally achieve the lowest unemployment in year and industry is finally getting back on track again so what will happen when no-one has a licence left?? economic collapse of the UK and everyone out of work again. plus no more revenue from the unlucky motorist to support everyone on the dole. :rant:

Surely they'd have (not) registered your speed at 2 miles range and you'd have to slow down just as quick - otherwise they've just got longer to take more non-readings, with more excuse to pull you for whatever excuse they choose. Means in fact you just have to drive slower further. Or something. Basicaly what I'm saying is that the normal course of events is the same but happens further from the camera.
How could a camera operator be sure he/she has targeted the correct car with a laser operated from over a mile away? And how will the picture be good enough to identify the number plate if taken from such a distance? Is this just scare tactics, or can you really buy a hand-held device of such stunning accuracy for a mere £8k?

The video wont see the driver from that range or the plate, theyll use the normal cheap crap to get you on film when you come nearer......kinda piss on their chips if ya did a u turn tho!
If they can successfully aim a laser at a moving target one mile away then they would be better employed in the army as snipers.

How will this work with motorbikes? we will hopefully have some advantage over the cars on this one-or will we? i would have thought the lack of front no.plate combined with dark visor and ability to stop and dirty up the numberplate before u-turning and running away would give us bikers the edge on this one.sneaky buggers though!!-a mile away- who'd have thought it would get this insane?
