A colleague of mine was caught by a Blunderside Tallivan travelling at a completely irresponsible 79MPH on a clear motorway. As an alternative to the fine and points he was offered a speed awareness course (that he hasn't been on yet!) The intersting points are these. They decide when you attend ie they give you a date. If you can't make that date, you get the points. If you're late, you get the points. If there is a completely reasonable reason why you can't attend on that date (holiday booked, can't get time off work, loved one in hospital) you get the points. If you're disruptive in any way (what the definition of 'disruptive' is we aren't quite sure) at any point during the 2 hours of propagander and snuff videos, you get the points.
Good stuff eh?

Go on the course, state the facts, go to court and fight the points on the basis of why should we have to listen to lies or take the points?

Do you still get the points if you just sleep through it all?

Only if you snore as that can be considered disruptive to other attendees learning experience.

he'es actually got the FAQ sheet they send you, but not on him. A couple he can remember are.........
What if there is a family disaster and you cannot attend the session? - you will be prosecuted in the usual way. Can I bring a parent along - No.
He's going to bring it in to work tomorrow so I'll dictate it word for word.!

Sounds like you get the points unless you agree to 2 hours of imprisonment.

Oh id just love to go on one of these!

Know it all partnership dildo: " A third of accidents are caused by speeding".

Me: " My trousers caught fire the other night while attempting to burn a piece of government oppression surveillence machinery; is my accident included in that third, or is it in another third?"

Disruptive? Theyd have to call the cops to have me removed from the proceedings!

I cannot believe that these Stasi methods can be pushed through....how the ferk can they say you're being disruptive?
What the hell do THEY actually know? quoting somne greenslime unfounded propaganda coupled with Ford Anglia braking distances and lies about global warming???? I'd go to the course, be disruptive (in other words disagree with their bent statistics) and them fight the bastards in court.......

All you have to do is turn up and nod for 2 hours, if time allows better than points. Still does not change the fact the speed should have been ignored.
Also with the new points system they want he will be on for 2 points, that maybe worth standing up in the course and hurling abuse for.

I've heard on some of these speed courses you actually have to go for a drive with an instructor in the passenger seat of your car so they can assess your driving. I would love to go on one and turn up in the Tiger. Sorry, what's that you said? Slow down? I can't hear you!!

All the reps in our company have had invite to the Lancs course. They were not allowed to drive in their own cars as "their car is not insured for this purpose" per ADI to them. You have to do the drive in the ADI's car, usually a Corsa (and definitely not what they are used to) - which may be the one with the L-plates!

I asked them what happened (after all - drive through there myself, and, even with b2 on dash, it is definitely unpleasant area to drive through - and they do not abide by guidelines of 10%+2 - too many get invites for 33-34mph and could be to make up numbers as most are prosecuted at 36mph - over cut-off at 35mph )

Anyway, according to our guys (two copped at 34mph and 35mph - copy NIPs in their personnel files ) - morning session (3 hours) made up of chat about why people speed, reminder of two-second rule, principles of COAST, and a hazard perception game "where groups of six tried to spot the hazard on DVD run on normal TC screens). They said it was a bit like that old Krypton factor observation test where you saw something briefly and were asked questions on it afterwards.

Afternoon session: so-called 2 hour drive with ADI. Except our guys must have been so good that most of afternoon was spent on NSL and fast roads and in local greasy spoon cafe for a brew!

Their name is on "naughty boy" list for 3 years - which means 1mph past Lancs scam in future and they get points!

On their form - in fairness - they did get asked for "unsuitable date", and were given option of Lancs or Staffs for the course. It did say that once offered - would not be offered again, and non-show would mean points. However, one could not turn up on date offered, and he phoned immediately. In fairness, they did revise the date to one more convenient to him and his employer - but they charged a further £25 - making total cost of course £110! (And they say it is not about money!)

As for "disruptive" behaviour - they were told "swearing, and non-participation in class" were s

Wildcat, sorry to argue, but in Lancashire it IS 10%+2mph where enforcemnet starts (35 in 30, 46 in 40 etc).

Speed awareness only offered to first time "offenders" caught at 35 in 30.

Couldn't think of another (more appropriate) word to use instead of "offender", sorry. Poorly educated Police...

Can I go on the course a couple of times now and build
points up which I can then use on the roads later?

Can Sainsburys rewards or Air miles be exchanged for points?

A friend of mine went on one of these in Northants. He got a free pen, so not a total loss of 2 hours

Have checked with personnel. The NIPs on file say 34mph. Our two guys were done last June and July. The third one (35mph) in February last. Copies of all driving licences and related motoring documents are kept in our personnel files - as most senior staff have company cars and many other staff are allowed to drive pool cars on business.

They have now read this thread and would like to know if they can get refund and name off "naughty boys'" list. It is sore point - both IAM members!

Re first offence: they say girl on course was in lather because she was late and was nearly refused entry. She was held up ironically in RTA jam on M65. She would have been on 9 points had she missed it.

The blurb on back of their Course application form (which came with the Fixed penalty Notice) said that probationers and provisionals were precluded for the course, as were anyone who had been invited to one in last 3 years. The course is offered to anyone copped up to and including 35mph, and this is also stated on the web site. It is not offered to first offenders only.

Husband's colleague (a neurosurgeon copped at 34mph in Chorley whilst en route to hospital to actuallly save a life, is challenging his NIP. He has agreed to send copy to Paulie Smith when his solicitors have finished with it.

Perhaps the Lancs Prats make up their rules as they go along - judging from scam siting and complaints from the local population.
