The Daily telegraph 27May2004 said:
The prison unit that holds some of Britain's most notorious women criminals, including Rose West, is to close. Female inmates at Durham prison are to be moved to private jails in London and Peterborough.

The announcement followed a highly critical report from the prison inspectorate on conditions at the secure unit. Durham will lose its high security Category A status and become a "community jail".

Anne Owers, the chief inspector, said Durham was an "unsuitable environment to hold women". The special unit, nicknamed "She Wing", had seen six suicides in 18 months.

"Durham is a constricted and forbidding physical environment with little space for association or activity, and a particularly dispiriting and bleak exercise yard," she said.

Just run that by me again will you? "Britain's most notorious women criminals" are kept in "a constricted and forbidding physical environment with little space for association or activity, and a particularly dispiriting and bleak exercise yard" - isn't that part of their punishment?

This is almost exactly the environment I'd keep them in (with added rats, lice, etc.) until they were dragged out, put in a cart, driven round the town and hanged in public.

If the wing is to close, don't put them in "private prisons" with all the luxuries to which they abrogated any right - and at the taxpayer's (greater) expense - instead, why not ship them out to Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay ... or any American prison. In fact, why not ship Anne Owers out there so she can get a real sense of proportion!

This pi55es me off greatly!

Ach! Streaky - Liebchen!

It is called politically correct policy of being soft on the really dangerous and hardened criminals and being draconianly tough on the ones who pay up and have decided not to shut up!

Did you not know why they are emptying this wing?

It is to put all us "naughty creatures" who drive cars at a couple of mph over the posted lollipop sign in! And forget the mice, rats and lice - they would have record player with Dick's voice booming

"Speed Kills" and "Cameras Save Lives" and maybe even large TV screen showing his glazed eyes leering at us! That would be

THAT would be a "cruel and unnatural punishment" and outlawed under the Geneva Convention! So better hope the US Army doesn't take over runing Durham nick! - Streaky

Didn't they claim it had an oppressive and claustrophobic environment?

I told them putting bars on the windows was over the top!

They don't seem to mind the Victoria Line in the rush hour so Durham nick is probably a bit like a health farm

Streaky - tially and 100% agree with you. Why prisons now have to be pleasant is a little beyond me. I read about all sorts of things which need doing in this country; from rebuilding dry stone walls in the Lakes, to finding Piers Morgan and sawing his head off with a rusty knife...and we have all these people sitting around, twiddling their thumbs, who I'm sure could be of rather more use to the country.

bring back hard, manual labour!

There are almost 100,000 people behind bars in the UK.

The cost of each one varies, but its never cheap.

100,000 people.

Thats one helluva captive and cheap workforce.

Dont want to work?

Does lethal injection suit sir?

Made of wood too! But I thought he was more Pinocchio!

But what is this I read the other week - bodyguard for lying scumbag who murdered two lovely little girls at cost of £70K? Because - diddums - "other prisoners will give him hard time!"

World has indeed gone mad! You cannot punish the truly wicked: it is politically incorrect! - But you hammer the hard working honest classes in taxation, etc, to keep these serious low-lifes in relatively comfortable bed and board.

What is needed to run country properly --- is ferocious frenzied feline and friends - of course!

Things are cyclic. A generation ago prisons were "unpleasant". Now they're hotels, if we believe the papers. I guess in another few years things will swing back again. But who will be in them this time? The speeders....

Makes me laugh. It's a pretty well accepted fact that prisons aren't particularly effective at preventing reoffending.

So, why not do something different? Why are we locking up people and letting them do nothing? Why aren't they being educated, put to work, beaten with sticks, made to learn ballet, whatever? About time some alternatives were tried? Get 'em working on the railways/the roads. Let's make 'em a resource not a drain.

Can't do that, they'd all need Track Safety Certificates...
