What should I do at work today?
Discussion
Following on from a "You decide" thread, I'm going to be working a 2pm-10pm shift today, single crewed, on the divisional traffic car. This covers an area of roughly 150 square miles, and is a mixture of urban and rural areas. There are all types of roads in the division.
Radio calls pending, how would fellow PHers like me to spend my time (and the taxpayers' money)? Let me know before about middayish, as that is when I get ready/leave for work.
I'll let you know how it pans out...

Focus on quality of driving. People cutting up others, driving in their own little world.
Driving through Milton Keynes this morning had a numpty pull up in the left hand lane ( I was in middle lane going straight) next to me at a roundabout. They only start to signal right and look at me as if I am in the wrong lane!
Then at the next roundabout a mile later I have someone on the right of me wanting to turn left!
eejuts the lot of them!

Puggit, camera vans in our Division MUST comply with the sites binder carried in the vehicle - this has photos of the sites and exactly where the van has to be, as well as a written description (eg West side of XXX Road, facing south, outside number 73).
As for the other suggestions, on the list!

Ooooh. What an offer! Right...
1) First off nab a few tailgaters and "educate" them about stopping distances, the two second rule and what a reasonable margin for error is...
2) When it gets dark do a few of the front foglight boys for misuse of their lights
Errrm:
3) Nick the blasted cyclists who reckon its OK not to bother with lights because its the summer - even though its dark!
4) Have a few harsh (but fair) words with a few drivers determined to drive without due consideration for other road users...e.g. overtaking around blind flippin' corners...
Ahhh.
5) When you're in town make sure you remind people who park on crossings just because they're near the shop/school that the zig-zag lines are there for a reason!
Ohh. What an offer and I can't remember the full list of pet hates...

Volvod5 dude - There are other officers (plain clothes and uniform) specifically tasked with dealing with "druggies", but should I find any driving, you'll be pleased to know I'm a "field impairment tester", so they'll at least be off the road.
Any other suggestions (of a traffic nature) you'd care to make?

Concentrate on druggies, get the scum off our streets! However, motorists are easier I suppose and not so dangerous - to you - yet!
How about druggy drivers? There are plenty of them around NOW
If he does catch a druggy, that will probably be the end of his oportunity to do any other 'good deeds' as he will be in custody for the rest of his shift!
I completely agree with the 'stopping drivers who are blissfully unaware' suggestions. It would do the world a whole lot of good if some were stopped and informed how they should really start to consider that they are in a one tonne weapon, but in addition to this if you could be really nice about it that would be great.
People generally perceive the traffic police as 'the enemy amongst us' and so a bit of stopping people who are a little bit wrong, being nice and saying 'off you go then, but try not to do it again' might help change peoples attitudes of fair play.
Have a nice day out there playing with yer flashing lights and sirens and other groovy gadgets too

Er, other gadgets? Lights, sirens and eyes is all we get!
Unless you count six cones in the boot as a "Gadget"...!

What! NO laser sighted destructo beams, NO hand held penalty randomiser, NO jackets of invisibility!
You'll have to make do with the 'works standard issue' sarcasm then Oh yeah and that pedal on the right hand side <vroom vroom>
Have a good day at work and I hope you don't get any nasties, just some sunshine and a few doughnut stops maybe.

Pull over any car with the letters BMW 316 written on them. And educate them.....
Also pull over any Novas/Corsas/Fiestas/Escorts with 4 lads in wearing caps.
Other than that what the rest said, middle lane loosers, people not looking around them, and dangerous drivers. Oh and anybody doing over 140mph....just because I cant.

Um - that count the one at Garstang then? You know the one I mean? Hertz Rent-A-Van - parked illegally complete with talivan twits hiding under blanket in the back! They claimed they were taking photos of motorists speeding by and persecuting them at 1mph over the speed limit there. (hmmm! And you know I have over-active and very weird feline imagination - we had competition in the lab at the time as to who could dream up sassiest image! And I won! ) All Press at time carried the photo back in October! How about copping them at it! Under that blanket!
Different Division my dear! But you have reminded me we do have some covert sites for "boy racer" types, but I've only seen them used once.
The sites binders came about as a direct result of the bad press, as it was decided we should not park on DYL etc (even though there are exemptions) to avoid the "one rule for them..." argument. I can only speak from my own experience, but if it's not legal for Mr Joe Public to park there, then I don't park the van there.
Enough of this though, WildCat, what would you like me to do at work today? And hurry, time is running out before I leave WMHV70 Towers to earn my crust!
