Owning two cars (SORN?)

I have a bit of a dilemma and this new SORN legislation/insuring cars etc has confused me.

I am hoping to buy a new car tomorrow, I still have my old one however.

Do I have to either insure them bother or SORN one? is that how it works?

If its the latter (I have to SORN one) isn't that just a massive ballache for selling it on as noone can test driver it etc?

Insure the new car, then get the old one added on to the policy for a week or so (A limit of 2 weeks i think)

But then i'm effectively paying insurance for 2 cars?

I don't want to do that as i'm still technically a youngish driver (23) and both cars are performance cars so it would cost loads to do?

this system is a right mess,my son lost his job so had to cancel his insurance(£3000 a year for a car worth £800) and is now selling the car,but he has to put it on sorn which will now make it harder to sell and it also has no tax on now because it becomes void when you put it on sorn,as you said how can a buyer test drive it.

same problem here. selling a car with the new law is very silly indeed. my car is tax exempt and i still have to sorn it....

tax doesnt need to become void unless you ask for it
It's ok to keep it uninsured and SORNed and taxed.
It's also not illegal to use it on road if SORNed if someone has insurance to test drive it.
SORN is automatically removed when it transfers to a new keeper so it's useful to keep it taxed anyway other wise they have hassle trying to tax it (use V62) while DVLA is changing the log book over

Call your insurer. Many will provide a cover note for an overlap of a week/two weeks for an admin fee to cover both cars providing on,y one is use at any one time.

So far I am unable to repeat the previous claims about SORNing early. New tax period 1/8 - currently telling me there is already a "Successful transaction" present on the vehicle. This may just be the first few days of the period, so assume it referring to the tax I bought...will try again in a week or so.

Some will allow you an overlap anyway or some will let you add it as a temporary additional vehicle if you want to drive it.
Some wont.
According to SORN rules previously discussed the first you'll get from DVLA is a letter saying youre uninsured but not not SORNed. Only if you dont then insure or SORN do they issue the penalty.
It's not like having no tax and no SORN where the penalty can be issued straight away ( allegedly).

If you declare SORN online , but don't surrender the tax disc for a refund , you end up with a SORN car which still has tax .

It is currently a loophole which may be closed ( somehow ? ) in the future .

Doesn't work. As I said, I have 12 months tax (£20 !) and I cannot SORN online.

When I tried this 6 months ago, it also told me that you could only SORN online in the last month of tax (from the 5th IIRC).

If there is a loophole, I can't find it at the moment.

Unlikely also as it's illegal to use a SORN'd car on the road except for the exemption about traveling to/from an MOT/place of repair.

From the other thread I dont think it is a loophole? It was never intended to force you to untax while SORN. You only need SORN if the car is uninsured or untaxed
I agree with the online site though. When I looked it said you could only SORN when untaxed, but the other thread says you can do it if you carry on through that
The updated paper form was changed to say the same but apparantly para 1 can be crossed out otherwise you can't SORN if you have tax, which youd need to do before the tax runs out.
Like taking a car untaxed to an MOT station to get the MOT so you can tax the system has to allow for overlap periods

Unless youve found otherwise that only seems to apply to under 25yr olds . None of my policies have had that clause (yet!)

I think you just made that up

The illegal bit is to have an uninsured car on the road or uninsured unsorned ( but only after theyve told you and youve done nothing about it) or untaxed unless going to MOT
Using it while SORN isn't illegal so long as it's insured and taxed (unless going for an MOT)
There's logic in there somewhere

Right who knows if your tax has just run out and you need to get the MOT done before getting new tax - does it really have to be SORN for the day?

What about adding your new car to your insurance for a day or so to get it home.

Once it's home sorn it and use the old car until it sells, this will also have the advantage of focusing efforts on selling old car otherwise if you anything like me you end up with 2 car for years.

I would call your insurer as my policy did not say it either but it is a requirement for most policies !!

when i spoke to the dvla yesterday they informed me because i declared the car sorn the tax on the car has to be sent back(and refunded),they said you can not have a vehicle on sorn with tax on it.if i did not send it in they would fine me.you can not have sorn and tax at the same time.so as soon as you sorn it you have cancelled your tax.they did say if the new buyer gets the tax and insurance the car automatically comes off sorn.
