...park on the inside of double yellow lines.

Eg. Was at manchester airport to collect someone, but 45 mins early as the plane was delayed.

Drive down the road and parked in front of the "crash gates" was 2 taxis. Clearly illegal, as right in front of them on the gates were signs telling them so.

To the side of the gates is a large grass area, accessesable by a dropped kerb. The road that is by the side of this grass verge has double yellow lines. The verge is by the perimeter fence, which clearly states that going over the fence and being in the perimeter is prohibited-common sense.

However, the grassy area, approx 6 car spaces in size, was not causing an obstruction or any access issues to the gate.

Can you get a ticket for parking on the inside of the double yellow lines?

From the highway code: "Waiting restrictions indicated by yellow lines apply to the carriageway, pavement and verge"

Yes it is illegal unless you drive a BMW X3/4/5/6/7/8 or Audi wagon thingy.

As we're next to an airport, yellow lines are meaningless. You will not be allowed to wait anywhere you might be tempted to launch a missile.

There are loads of places to wait within spitting distance of Manchester airport, what's the problem..?

Round here it is illegal unless you are at the church near by. Infact anything seems to be legal if you belong to that church.

That's because God will forgive them. But traffic wardens won't!

If you want to park up for an hour near the airport then the best place thats still close is Threapwood Road at the Shadowmoss Road end. Parking on the grass near Ringway Road will result in you being moved on. HTH.

Nah they do here. If you go to the church Im talking about you seem to get a free pass to park wherever you want. Fully on the pavement, half on the pavement half on the road on double yellows, on a junction or right in the middle of a one way street.

So how does this apply to lay-bys along the main road near me then? The double-yellows are painted straight past them.

It's presumably not the carriageway, pavement or verge....it's a lay-by.

I found out the hard way with this, used to park my car on a verge the other side of some double yellows out the way in a heavily built up area and got a nice fat ticket. Although I had been parking there for years so I suppose it evened out!

You can park wherever you like as long as you have your hazard lights switched on. Fact. wink

@LuS1fer: OK I sort of get it, but your earlier comment that it applies up to the building line sort of negates that as surely the lines would still need to stop at lay-bys?

There are a number of non-conforming double yellows round here as well, my neighbour got done for parking on the OLD double yellows (which had been painted over, but the paint had deteriorated) - in this instance I would think the additional terminator painted across the original yellows would effectively invalidate the whole lot anyway. Sorry wandering off track here

In theory yes.

In practice, you'll never get a ticket for it. No idea why. Parking enforcement in this country is ridiculous.

Phone your local parking enforcement guys: they won't be remotely interested.

The highway is defined as up to the building line and therefore aplies to any area where parking is not authorised. A lay-by is an area provided for parking and any sign exempts it so to speak.
Yellow lines do need to be in good order and a sign has to be placed within a set distance of where you park so if the sign is gone, that also tends to invalidate them.

Reminds me of when our team coach 'broke down' on Twickenham car park as the attendants wanted us to move on hehe
