Assume I'm a clueless idiot (stop laughing at the back). What actually do the Transport police do? I keep seeing their cars bombing around nowhere near rail stations and that is about it.

The Force is also responsible for policing the London Underground system, the Docklands Light Railway, the Midland Metro Tram System and Croydon Tramlink.

Don't they spend their time catching fare dodgers rather than offering any kind of protection to customers ?
Only time I've ever seen them is hanging around waiting for the "runners" when tickets are being checked.
One of our Train Managers was attacked by some 'care in the community' case and it was nice to see these guys taking care of things. There are a lot of dangerous people on public transport, it's one of the reasons cars are so popular.
