Anyone have any idea what this device on the roof on one our local bib's traffic car would be used for?

It's a white cylnder shaped device on the side of the roof, not sure if its just used for measuring speed for the cops to pull people over or if its a camera as well. First saw it on a car driving past me pointing forwards, saw the same car a couple of days later parked in a lay by on a dual carriageway & the camera(?) was turned back facing the oncoming traffic.

Imagine I'd be screwed either way if caught by it, just curious really.

Infra-red floodlight for the ANPR camera probably. Hampshire have tiny rear-facing cameras in the back window and the floodlights bolted on top of the lightbar.

Yep. Definately ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recogniser).

Fab bit of kit.
