My car recently got flashed speeding,

i recieved the NIP, and i wasnt driving at the time.

The driver lives abroad and was visitin the UK. I filled in the NIP with the details of this driver.

I am now concerned because i have read stories about people getting arrested for Perverting the Course of Justice because the driver was not from UK.

Does anyone know of any cases where this has happened or what the procedure is for a case like mine?

So your form naming Johnny Foreigner goes back to the issuing authority, who will look at it and ponder, porkies or real?

If they decide real then they may bin, most probable, but cannot say for certain as policy of department not known. They could, lay an information against JF and keep on file so that a summons be served at a later date should his name come up from various records that he is back in the country. (Doubtful course of action.)

If they decide porkies, and who could blame them for they must be inundated with this type of try on to the deteriment of the real cases, they may, repeat may, write back asking for evidence the use of your vehicle was covered by Insurance and some evidence of the truth of the matter. (Long thread on this furthjer back).

Who knows, mon ami, it is the lap of the Gods.

Anyone know what the hire companies do when a foreign punter gets caught?

Some send a copy of the completed hire agreement with the S172, whether or not it's a foreigner.

Digressing a bit, but several hire car companies used to have a nice little scam going with the police in a certain Mediterranean island a few years ago involving non-payment of parking fines.....

If a parking ticket was served, prompt payment secured a 25% discount. But many visitors tried to nip off home without paying, so the plice and the hire car companies came to an 'agreement'. When a ticket was served, the police would tip off the hire car company who would immediately pay up at the discounted rate. Then they'd demand the full fee back from the punter when he came to hand back the car - and would split the difference 50:50 with the police......

One slight snag with this - if you were honest enough to pay the fine yourself the hire car company might end up paying as well if they were too quick - and if they then demanded payment at the airport, their scam would be exposed!

Hence I can see the reluctance to accept "It was not I - it was my foreign friend who has now returned to Zkvovkiskoya".....particularly if the 'Registered Keeper' has a few points already>

They got me in April and I live in Ghana.

Sent them residents permit, copy of passport etc. etc.

When I phoned up and queried the guy said that they 'would almost certainly not' pursue the issue.

They did. God knows how, but they tracked me down in Ghana. Their first attempt failed, but the (very nasty) reminder got through.
