So, to sum up govt policy:

When short of cash, criminalise something (usually motoring related) and fine people. Deny it's anything to do with money and it's all in the name of 'safety' no matter how obvious it's not.

Bring back Guy Fawkes

If this piece of idiocy ever gets onto the statute books, my GPS will simply no longer warn me of speed cameras, but of 'accident black spots' along with the recommended maximum speed to approach them. Criminalise that then!

As I understand it the move is to ban radar & laser detectors to put us in line with other european countries. GPS (only) based systems would be not be affected.

I thought we'd already proven in law in the UK that detectors are passive devices and therefore totaly legal?

Unless of course were governed by Brussels instead of London - and our laws are worthless?

I think that's the way it's heading - Tony is supposed to be reviewing the UK law and "may" bring us into line with Europe. Dunno if it'll actually happen but they've toed the line with thing like the EU copyright directive.

People keep telling me its illegal to use a radar and laser detector in scotland. I use one anyway as I've come to the conclusion the law is wrong.

HM Govt will see gatso-spotters as devices that enable motorists (boo, hiss) to evade the due process of law. Which is either to be fined to hell and back, or drive at 20 in festering queues of numpties and roadworks. Neither fate is too harsh for the evil motorist.

What's the difference between a radar detector telling us there is a Gatso ahead and a camera sign telling us there is camera ahead or our eyes telling us there is a camera ahead or another driver telling us there is a camera ahead.

Has anyone ever known a government which has used the word "ban" as often as this bunch of fascists?

I'm sure that's what gun owners thought when the government banned them. Did they get it?

Of course we're governed from Brussels now. If TB signs the new constitution then that commits us to EU law over-ruling UK law. If that nice unelected Mr Romano Prodi wants to ban doorstep milk deliveries, farmers' markets, warm beer or cricket then he can, and TB can't do a thing about it. Just a tidying up exercise, of course....
