Do you know anyone who knows anyone who even KNOWS anyone that's been caught by one? Cos I don't. Lets face it we all know (of) someone that's been caught by regular speed cameras or police laser point-&-shoot cameras, but I don't know anyone (even 3rd hand) that's been caught by average speed cameras ie SPECS. So, is it all baloney?

Yep, I personally know two people who have been caught by an average speed camera. Both on the Isle of Wight - speed camera on Ryde Pier set at 10mph. Not risk driving down the pier since they put these daft cameras in.......

Not known anyone on regular 50mph road works though.....

Didn't the Hamilton's get done by average speed camera s on the M62? I think they wormed out of it by not remembering who was driving.

No I make sure I keep it at 50 even though lots of drivers pass me at warp speed in the average speed grand prix

I was on a speed awareness course with 17 people that were caught by the same average speed camera a few years back, so yes they do work.

Friend on the A9 - got caught with some temp cameras at 76/50 over about 7 miles. What made it worse was getting caught about 3 miles after the speed camera by plod - 77 mph. Two separate offences, six points, very ouch.

Im sure i remember seeing a similar post about a year ago, anyway since then i now know of someone that has been caught by the ones on the M1 near junction 10-13.
Normally set my cruise to 55 now as my speedo over calculates, GPS speed is 52

A road engineer told me you're ok below 57, but I wouldn't want to test it.

I regularly set the cruise to 54 with no problems.

I believe many of the cameras are dummies. An example was the M1 three year widening exercise north of East Midlands Airport. Two or three cameras had strong floodlights lighting the road where the cameras were looking, which suggests they need help at night to work which, in turn, makes me think these were the only live cameras in fifteen miles of roadworks.

Do you mean in the SPECS zone on the A616 Stocksbridge Bypass? They're the only SPECS I can think of round there!

Spoilsport. You just had to include a hyphen in the title to wreck my chances of a little joke.

There are some of these cameras on a 50mph stretch of roadworks on the M23 between the M25 and Gatwick, both ways. I go through them every day on my commute, and I'm amazed by the number of people I see going along at 70mph+, then braking when they approach the cameras, and then speeding up again. It seems that many people simply don't understand the concept of the word "average"!
